BURIED is Lynda La Plante’s latest thriller. (published in 2020)
The title is a great thriller; crime drama; police procedural; mystery; detective story.
It is the first book in a new series by Lynda La Plante featuring detective Jack Warr. It is also a culmination of sorts to WIDOWS featuring Dolly Rawlins, wife of notorious criminal Harry Rawlins.
Ms. La Plante also writes a ‘young Jane Tennison’ series; Jane Tennison of Prime Suspect fame and the Anna Travis series.
“Millions of stolen, untraceable bank notes lie untouched in an old Victorian cottage, the hidden legacy of Dolly Rawlins and her ‘widows’. When a fire breaks out at the deserted cottage, with a badly charred body inside with what looks like thousands of burnt bank notes, it attracts the attention of the police and one young detective in particular, Jack Warr.”
Excellent, tense reading. My only comment is that there are a heck of a lot of characters to keep track of! ****

Fantastic Intro for a New Character

Everything you want in a crime novel, but I would expect no less from Ms LaPlante. She is a genius in character development. I can almost see them, they are so realistic. The storyline kept me engaged to the end. Love seeing Jack as he grows into a force to be reckoned with. Will be waiting for the next installment.

Hopeless Mess

This booked sucked! I’ve enjoyed many British police procedurals, and none have them have been this amateurish. The main character behaves like a nutter, and one of his fellow cops is completely out of his depths. Neither would ever be be considered serious copper material.

What a disappointment!
Reviewed in the United States on 17 March 2021Verified Purchase
I loved Lynda LaPlante's Jane Tennyson and Anna Travis series, but the first book in this series was a huge disappointment. First of all, there are way-too-many characters to keep track of for this kind of a book, and they are not vivid enough to be memorable from one page to the next. Secondly, the protagonist, Jack Warr, is lazy, not particularly sharp, and lacks a moral compass. Then there are the women, at home and at work, who surround Jack and are captivated by his eyebrows but clueless to his character. The only thing that disappoints me more than having wasted a few nights reading this book is purchasing the second book when I bought the first.
