Product Description

A deadly game of hide and seek.
With blood still on her hands, Samantha Matthews is on the run, running from dark secrets and a man she prays to God will never find her. Running and hiding, just to stay alive. She had no choice but to run, to leave, to hide and forget about her life before. When Samantha believes she's gained enough distance from her past and her demons, she stops running, hoping to find her future in the heavily wooded area of the Adirondack Mountains, a place she never expected to encounter a man with secrets as dark and as sordid as hers.
Kade Grayson is hiding, not from the demons after him, but from himself and from the entire outside world, wishing every day he could have just died. Arrogant and domineering, he’s tormented and terrorized by his past, seeing nothing good for his future. With the ghosts of his past still haunting him, he has exiled himself to a life of solitude, only living for his words and through his stories.
Until her.
An undeniable attraction, turns into hate and then ultimately obsession, an obsession that grows into a powerful story of love and redemption.
Will the bond they have begun to build between them grow stronger than the tragedies that have scarred both of their lives? Or will they allow their demons to consume them?
This book is a full length Adult Contemporary Romance and is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and sexual content.

This book was amazing. I've never read anything by this author but have heard great things and she didn't disappoint. The back-stories to both the main characters were brutal. Kade Grayson was just so thrilling to read, I've never read a character like him before and being in his mind blew me away. He was twisted, dark, haunted but remarkably beautiful at the same time. What he went through was horrendous and I hope he will start living soon enough. Sam/Lainly was such a brilliant heroine she just was one tough chick! Although I would have liked to get more into her back story I feel like that will definitely come in the 2nd book so I can't wait to jump in. The only fault I could give this book would be that I found in repetitive with the descriptions and I found my mind straying when it the character would ramble on. I found that the story repeated itself just using different works and phrases to say the same thing about the same person or situation and found there wasn't at times a whole lot of dialogue and where there should be there were inner thoughts of the character. But other than that, a fantastic read and can't wait to see the rest of the story unfold.

Wow, that was some story! I loved the characters and the intense romance between Kade and Sam but there was so much more to the story than just romance. A definite mist read!

3.0 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars!! 16 June 2015

Well this was yet another disappointing read. I thought for sure I'd love this one since all my GR friends rated it so highly but I just did not connect with these characters at all. I don't feel like writing a formal review but the main things that didn't work for me was:

The writing: it felt really weird. The author constantly capitalized sentences and italicize way too much. I swear I couldn't get through one page without A BUNCH OF THIS and a bunch of that. It just wasn't necessary and annoyed the crap out of me. The author also knocked down the barrier between reader and the characters and at times spoke to the readers and instead of feeling like it helped involve me more in the story, it made me want to pull away. Made it less real.

The characters and the way they act: they're supposed to be in their 30s but they sure as hell didn't act like it. Of course, Samantha the heroine felt the need to constantly reminds us that she was a "grown woman". Literally, over and over she looks down on people and judges them and demands to be treated like a "grown woman". I don’t like how at times it felt like she was judging people who weren’t like her. She certainly judges other women who could want men that she finds insulting. Like the Alpha Male. She says only women who are insecure and have low self-esteem could want a man like that and because she was a “grown woman” and confident in herself she saw them for what they truly are. And sure, Alpha Male’s aren’t the best sometimes but don’t knock down what other people are attracted to. Ironic that she falls for Kade who most definitely is an alpha male. Hypocritical much, Samantha?

Overuse of words: I swear it's like the author lost her thesaurus or something. The overuse of the words savage, ferociously and brutal was just crazy. And the sentence "Let’s lay it out, shall we?” showed up more times than I can count throughout the book, from both characters.

Oh and lets not forget about the fact that this book is supposed to be about a girl on the run from a scary past and yet she doesn't even talk about it until about 80% into the book and for only like 2 chapters, maybe a few pages in each. Honestly I don't even know what this book was trying to sell. What was it trying to make me feel? Think? I don't know.

I gave it 3 stars because despite how hard it was for me to continue at times, I was semi-interested enough to keep reading till the end. It could just be me and my moodiness so if you want to give this a try I won't stop you. This book was relatively high ratings so I could just be the odd ball.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD! 5 February 2014

While I am tempted to give this 5 stars because I really did love it. I give very few books 5 stars (like maybe 6 out of hundreds that I have read). I anticipated the release of this book like many of her other fans, stalking the author on Facebook to see if she posted a new teaser and I literally squealed when it was released. I enjoyed Zolendz's other books and had pretty high hopes for this book. I have to say I was not disappointed. I only sometimes like first-person writing because I don't like spending that much time in someone else's head, it has to be the right kind of character for me to get into it. I liked one, that both main character's POV was written and two, I did not find either one of them got on my nerves (in a bad way). The story hooked me from page one and I did not get much sleep that evening because I couldn't stop reading. Sam is running from her past and trying to start a new life. Kade who lives with a dark past has buried it and it has made him into a jerk (there are better words really to describe him but trying to keep things PG). The chemistry between them is intense and my favorite part of the book. The story made me laugh out loud, bite my nails, and had a whole bunch of other inaudible noises coming from my mouth. Now I am waiting anxiously for book two.
5.0 out of 5 stars Tortured Attraction 14 March 2014

Samantha Matthews and her friend Jennifer needed a place to lay low for a while and ended up seeking refuge at a club owned by Dylan Grayson who gives them both waitressing jobs and is kind enough not to ask questions about why they showed up with blood on their clothes. Samantha is just looking to blend in for once in her life but when she catches the eye of Dylan's reclusive brother Kade, their attraction is too much for either of them to stay isolated any longer.

First of all, there is nothing about this story I didn't like. From the first page, Christine Zolendz drops you right in the middle of a fast paced mystery that leaves you with just as many questions as answers. Samantha is a strong beautiful woman who will do anything to stay alive and protect the people she cares about and although she has been through so much, her life hasn't broken her and sees worth in Kade who doesn't see it in himself.

Kade Grayson can never mask what his past has done to him and never apologizes for his abrasive personality but this author has written him in a way that his pain is justified and not just seen as self-loathing. This story is well-written, sexy and pulls you so deep into these characters that you don't want the story to end. One of the best reads of the year and I highly recommend.

I read and enjoyed Christine Zolendz New Adult PNR series Mad World a while back. I knew when Brutally Beautiful was released I would be reading how she did with an adult book. She did not disappoint. Wow what a story that is twisted, a bit on the dark side, unpredictable, page-turner and original plot. Awesome characters that leaped off the pages with realism. Both characters have some serious issues from their past that made them the way they are in the present. Christine Zolendz did her research and did it well. I fell in love with both characters.

Kade the hero had me going crazy in a good way with his ups and downs. One minute he is the biggest jerk then the next he is the sweetest. This man had some serious demons inside and is really messed up in the head. Wow he can be intense and twisted. Dual POV and loved being in his head. His POV can be broody and dark at times. Loved the flashbacks that were nicely layered through out the book about his past. They are dark and on the mysterious side. Once I realized why he is the way he is I felt sorry for him. From one of his flashbacks I did have a idea of what happened in his past. Then Christine Zolendz with her amazing writing skills started having me second guessing my self. Oh My gosh I was anxious in what direction she was taking the plot that I could not swipe my kindle fast in enough. Well I do not want to spoil anything so that is all you all are getting out of me on it.

Samantha has secrets from her past that she is hiding from. I feel readers did not get all of her past secrets and I am sure we will learn more in book 2. She was the perfect match for Kade. She consumes every twisted thought he has. She is on the sassy side, definitely could hold her own with Kade and his crazy moods.

As for the steam factor. Only a few sexual tension moments that were good but nothing really too exciting. Few sex scenes that were hot but again nothing really too exciting. It did work for me as I was more engrossed what was going on with Kade.

The ending was good but nothing spectacular. No cliffhanger for those that hate them. I do want to read book 2 but it is nothing I have to read ASAP.

I wish CZ would get picked up by a top publisher. She is a great story teller and feel her books could stand out more.
4.0 out of 5 stars F*** 1 February 2014

Okay, so I picked up this book because I have basically read every other book by Christine Zolendz. As a writer, she is able to create worlds and stories where you can't help but be sucked into.
The beginning to this was, how do I put this? UMMMM... F***... Yeah. I think that totally sums it all up.
Both Samantha & Kade are just... I don't think that there is a way to explain them, unless you are willing to accept that they are F*ed up... Like HUGE...
But you know what? They work! And yes, they are screwed up, but they are good for each other. And that there is the beauty in this book.
I definitely LOVE a guy who has issues. Don't get me wrong, I love the heroes who are perfect and go all out to make it happen and who make it better for the heroine, but every now and then, I love a guy that is F*d up! And, we actually do get that in this book. The hero making it better for the heroine. So every one wins!!
And yes, this is one of the books that I totally discussed with my sister after we both read it! We don't usually do that unless a book is really good and we both REALLY liked it! I guess you can say that we are both screwed up like that!
