Dax knows restraint. I don't think I'm giving too much away by letting slip that for as long as he's known her, he's been in love with the beautiful Lynsie.

That, of course, would be all fine and dandy if it weren't for the small matter of her being married to, and desperately in love with, his best friend Lincoln.

Consequently, unlike so many other novels where the alpha male swoops in to get the girl, Dax does the noble thing ... nothing. Stays friends with Lincoln, and with Lynsie, suffers patiently as she sets him up on date after date, trying to find him the perfect woman all the while knowing he's already found her, and she isn't available.

Then, in a tragic twist of fate, Lincoln is removed from the picture leaving the road open for Dax to be exactly what Lynsie needs in her time of sorrow, a friend. Just a friend, and maybe someday, eventually, something more.

There's a wonderful nobility in Dax's restraint. Time and again pushing aside his own wants, needs and desires, because the strongest of his desires is to see to Lynsie's needs. That's not just a romance novel cliche, that's real love shared via the written word.

There are books that stick with you long after you've read them, and I strongly suspect that this is one of them, because, strange as it may seem, it stuck with me for a year before I got around to reading it.

The wife read it a year ago, and as she does with most books she reads, she told me all about it as she was reading, and even that second hand retelling of the story was powerful.

Reading it for myself, even more so.

This is such a brilliant story. I guessed what was coming from the blurb and was hoping that I wouldn't come to love the husband but I did. And still managed to really enjoy the story. Must read!

This wasn't a bad story, I just found it a bit depressing & predictable. I couldn't get into it. I did however like Dax.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the Wings of Fate 12 March 2014

This was a wonderful story of triumph, healing and true love born out of tragedy and fate.

Erika introduces us to the ultimate military couple Lincoln & Lynsie. He is a pilot that is climbing up the ranks and is going to be an Army lifer. She is the daughter of an Army Commander soon to be General. Also meet Dax, who is Lincoln's life-long best friend/brother. He loves being a pilot but not necessarily the Army life. He is truly the ultimate best friend even to Lynsie. They seem to be in the dynamic duo with the trusty side-kick....only the side-kick harbors feelings of his own.

When Lincoln loses a good friend due to a crash he concludes that life is too short to put things off. Things in their relationship they have been putting off suddenly come to the fore-front. Their future is moving along beautifully until tragedy strikes in their own home.

Come read how Erika writes how these amazing characters pick up the pieces when one of their own family isn't there any more. Watch how fate shows us that what we thought was not necessarily so. And how out of tragedy a wonderful and beautiful relationship between two soul mates is born.

Erika has out done herself with Broken Wings. This is such an amazing book. I usually do not read military themed books but am so glad that after reading Jenn' Foor's Love's Suicide (another military book) I was steered in the direction of this book. I have read every book Erika has written and with each one her writing keeps maturing.

Congrats Erika on such a great book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 13 March 2014

Great book! I was so hesitant to purchase this book because of the preview of the story. I was thinking how on earth am I going to like reading a book about a girl who loses her husband and then jumps in bed with his best friend. I just didnt think I could get on board with something like that, but I was WRONG! I tried the sample and was hooked. Erika developed all the characters and let us have a glimpse of Lynsies relationship with her husband before his death. We fell in love with Linc and Dax, which was what pulled at my heartstrings when watching Dax and Lynsie fall in love too! Their love, especially Daxs for Lynsie was so evident and really unconditional. Watching them build a new relationship and watching Dax show extreme patience waiting for Lynsies feelings to play catch up was heartwarming. The journey of love, loss and love again was perfect. This book was a five star read!!

"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return."~Leonardo Da Vinci

Can I start off by saying that this book might be in my top favorite books of all time?! I could not put it down!

This is a heartbreakingly beautiful story about three amazing people. Lynsie Fox, her husband Lincon and his best friend Dax Adams. Lincon and Dax have been best friends since they were children. They both had a dream of becoming pilots. Lincon joined the military and not too long after, Dax joined him as well.
Lincon met the General's daughter, Lynsie, and was instantly in love. They married soon after. Lynsie, Lincon and Dax were like the three amigos. They were always together. Not wanted Dax to be the third wheel, Lynsie started fixing him up with every girl she can think of, but for some reason he never wanted any of them.

"Sometimes it's when you aren't looking that you find what you've been needing all along without ever knowing it was what you wanted...
Sometimes there are things you want, but know you'll never have...because they aren't yours to have." ~Dax

Lynsie decides to leave it alone and move on. Lincon and Lynsie are so great together and their love is so strong. They have what you would call a "picture perfect" relationship. But the bad thing is, is that you never know how long a good thing will last.

During a Forth of July celebration, a flight stunt goes wrong and the lives of Dax and Lynsie are changed forever. How do you move on from such tragedy? How can you truly breathe again?

Dax knows that he has to do everything in his power to be there for Lynsie no matter what. Funny thing is that he needs her just as much.

"I've already made an unspoken vow to myself and Lincon that I'll be whatever Lynsie needs. If it's in my capabilities, I'll make it happen."~Dax

The heartbreak that these characters go though was so emotionally heartbreaking that I had to stop reading at certain points to collect myself. I was a wreck!!
Dax. Oh, that man. He's amazing!! Not only is he dealing with his own grief, but he also has to push his feelings aside. Feelings that he's kept hidden for so long.

"How can something that comes so naturally feel so wrong?"~Dax

Lynsie feels so scared all the time. She can't move forward. The only thing that she has, the only thing that helps the pain is Dax.
"You're my life raft, Dax"

As they live day by day, things slowly start changing. Suddenly, it's not all about comfort anymore. Comfort has moved into something more. Something they never saw coming and they have a hard time stopping it.

"But now you know that I will always be yours...always have been."~Dax

"You don't hold me back, Lynsie. You move me forward."

Can two broken people mend their broken hearts together? Is it wrong? Is it right? Can love prevail?

"Thank you for loving me."
"I never had a choice."

OH MY GEE!!!!! This book!! I cried. Like seriously ugly cried through most of this book! I could never imagine going through this. Whether it was myself or someone i knew. It would be so hard. Erika, you are truly amazing with words. I was hooked from the first page. Thank you for sharing this part of military life with us.
I recommend this book to every single person!! You will laugh, smile, mourn, cry, break, then ugly cry again, swoon and then cry some more. If I could give 100 starts for this book, I would!! Wonderful!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Very emotional read 24 March 2014

Very emotional read

I won't summarize this book. Many other readers have done so perfectly well before me and reading the blurb gives you enough information referring to what the story is about.

The story line isn't something new or revealing in this genre and it's also slightly predictable. In any case, I don't think that the author's intention was to best any of these features. But as the plot unravels (very slowly), Erika Ashby's main intention becomes obvious: through her main characters she lets the reader participate in an absolute roller coaster of intense and raw feelings that are framed by the plot. Highlight of the book is definitely the emotional world of and around the main characters -- the plot, character development etc. are secondary to this.

Hence, there is the sky high love between Lincoln and Lynsie that leave me deeply impressed. Then the absolute emotional downfall through the loss of Lincoln. Different kinds of love from people around Lynsie, but mainly the unbelievable devotion from Dax who tries desperately to help her through the nearly unbearable pain she is facing. How he handles his feelings towards Lynsie and how he places his "wants" secondary to her needs. How both of them try desperately to move on, without though forgetting Lincoln. All these feelings are so perfectly transmitted to the reader that I absolutely sympathized and empathized every emotion and phase through which Lynsie and Dax went.

The book was written in the first person singular, which isn't really my preferred narration form. However, since the chapters alternated between Dax and Lindsay, there was plenty of emotional insight and I completely forgot about the "I"-form.

An emotional, heartfelt and wonderful read that I can only highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars My heart is all over the place... Spoiler alert! 24 April 2014

“Sleep tight, beautiful girl. I’m going to go tell your Daddy ‘hi’.”

I freaking cried ... I ugly cried.

I don't quite know how I feel about this book, my heart is all over the place.
I love Dax and his dedication to Lynsie. But my heart got left somewhere in the sky with Lincoln.

Erika did a great job to bring their pain in the story to life. The pacing was there, but then...
Everything was there but the sparks between Dax and Lynsie, I feel because of what happened to Lincoln, it took away from their love story, and I'm saying this with all due respect to the memory of Lincoln.

Erika spend so much time paying attention to their loss and how they worked through it, and it was awesome, that when they finally put their broken pieces together it felt like she was pushed for time, and the falling in love scene got cut short. I found myself saying 'nooo' many times out of frustration when Dax and Lynsie's love scenes were just ended or not given enough attention, after all the effort she put into the heartbreak scenes.

I felt Dax got robbed of his HEA, and even though Erika reassures us he found it, me as the reader didn't feel convinced of this.
It had nothing to do with it being too soon after Lincoln's death, it was nothing like that. I think they held onto his memory beautifully. It was all about not giving us enough of them as a couple and how they finally got together. There was the pain, the birth, the awesome friendship, the awards evening and wham! - we are a couple. No sparks. I'm a romantic at heart, I need those fireworks and Lincoln took it with him the night he died. That's the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars.

With that said... this book made me cry like a damn baby. If you want a good book hangover this is the one for you ;)
