Product Description

When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan.

Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House.

James Holden hasn’t been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can’t seem to stop himself from pursuing him.

Just a little fun - that’s what James tells himself. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He’s a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding.

Broken.

Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James?

(M/M romance. Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content. ***Please note*** This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may be uncomfortable for some readers.)

Basically this is a wonderfully warm love story. More importantly it's great to see mental illness not being treated like a freak show. I hope that it helps readers who have not seen mental illness up close, gain a better understanding of the issues. I have a friend with bipolar. I don't know how close to reality Jame's internal struggle is but the externals were pretty close. Theodore's acceptance of Jame's illness modelled what everyone should strive for.

I'm giving this a five star for two simple reasons.
1. The character development was great. I connected with both Theo and James. I felt what they felt, and I loved them both.
2. Mental illness is tricky to portray, and a lot of romances tend to use relationships, and sex to 'cure' it. I felt this story did justice to the portrayal of a man living with mental illness and the acceptance of the man who loves him.
This is difficult to read, and I would caution readers who are in a fragile place to wait until they are feeling okay before picking this up.
If anything in this book triggers you, please contact a loved one, and your local crisis service.
This is a beautiful story, that took me through some rough places, but it is a romance, and James and Theo deserve the happy times they get, especially since its a battle, and not every day is a win.

Broken.

That is exactly how I feel after finishing this book.

Broken was a difficult read for me. Not because it was a bad book. On the contrary, it was brilliant. But the subject matter hit a bit close to home.

I could completely relate to James. His thoughts, his feelings, his justifications for his actions. I have been in his shoes. Felt those feeling, had those thoughts.

In Theodore and James' family, I could see my family. Their helplessness, their pain as they tried to help me.

Broken went from zero to 100 in the first couple of chapter! All I could think was

For the first 45% of the book there was an amazing push/pull between Theo and James. I just wanted them to get their act together.

Then at about 50% my heart shattered along with Theodore's. I couldn't read through the tears. I am sure the neighbours were wondering what animal was dying with the ungodly noises that came from me. Ugly, snotty crying ensued.

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”

Ms Haken hit every emotion. I was heartbroken. I laughed. I cried. I felt... hope. It made me want to call my mum at midnight to tell her sorry for what I put them through.

Even now, writing this review I am feeling emotional. I have a lump in my throat. I could easily burst into tears.

Reading the synopsis, I wondered whether James' demons might have been of the mental illness variety. I certainly was not expecting how deep Broken delved, or the visceral reaction I would have to it.

So thank you Ms Haken for taken the darkness that is mental illness and bringing it out into the light. It is sad that even in 2016 there is still the stigma surrounding mental illness, and it is about time it goes.

This is not all rainbows and butterflies, it's real life, it's full of emotions and will tear your heart out.

The story of James and Theodore was so well written, it captured so many emotions, laughter, heartbreaker, frustration, sympathy and love.

James is stubborn, he comes across and headstrong, determined, frustration and arrogant, but goddam he broke me.

Theodore, what a Man, kind, caring, compassionate, loyal and totally in love with James.

I was left speechless with this book, all those emotions the character felt I felt, I was up crying at 12:30am when Nicola decided to break my heart with this story, I could not put it down till I knew how it ended.

An amazing well written book that is highly recommended.

It took me a few hours to read this book, once started I had to finish it.
Sometimes you read books and just want them to wrap up and end other times you want the story to keep going even though it's come to its logical conclusion, this story was one of the other times, I found the subject matter a little hard to read because I've been through mental illness myself and even though this was a work of fiction it reminded me that there is more than just darkness, that there is light there as well and all you need is people who care, I'd recommend this book for a story that is full of warmth, caring and understanding, it shines a light on what life can dish out for some of us, but also what we can do to help ourselves lead a kinder existence.

This book is more than just a simple MM Romance, it also beautifully covers the sensitive and often unspoken mental health issues of depression and bipolar disorder, intertwined with a romantic journey between both the heroes, James & Theodore, a story that gripped my attention from the first pages to the last. I was not sure what to expect from this MM romance and am so happy I took a chance on both this Author and book and would recommend this story to anyone. Amazing story, well worth 5 Stars.
