I am torn with how to write this review as I adore L.J. SHen and her amazing series to date yet felt this was a little inconsistent with prior work - I’d almost recommend reading it as a standalone to not feel frustrated... because the fact is LJ Shen creates real and complex characters like no other author I know.
Knight isn't a hallmark hero, he's dealing with his mother slowly dying... Luna isn't the perfect teen virgin heroine waiting for her Knight to swoop in a save her. She fights her own battles and she messes up too.
So I really wanted to like it but there were too many unnecessary dramas such as other men, other women, mummy issues, lack of communication, etc... that were too repetitive for me to enjoy Knight and Luna as a couple. It just lacked the joy you normally get as a pay off - it was all angst.
‘Broken Knight’ is a moving story about love, pain and hope... so while I got frustrated at times, the amazing writing of LJ Shen made it worth some of the minor nuisances...
What an intensely emotional roller coaster this book was . It has everything ! Love, lust , angst , grief and trauma , disability, addiction and teenage stupid head ness (honestly I wanted to shake them a few time and say what the hell are you doing!) anyway... haha Written beautifully and with heart I loved this book .
Knight and Luna come from tight knit families and a group of friends that clearly love and care about each other . Luna is a selective mute and knight is adopted with his adopted mum terminally ill. Together they try to navigate their strong connection (since birth), falling in love while being teenagers and facing many hurdles . They are best friends who are clearly meant to be together but need to do a lot of growing up first ! I loved it and definitely recommend reading it !
On a side note - I read this book as I kept seeing high reviews and feedback and it popped up on my newsfeed numerous times . This was my first book by this author and I went in blind . Although it was perfectly fine to read as a standalone I did feel like I was entering a world that was starting somewhere way down the track - that I should know the characters and some of their history already . When I finished the book I realized that 1. This is book 2 in a series (oops ) and also 2. There is a series about the parents as well (I knew it!! ) so from here I will Go right back to the beginning 😂 but I’m excited and willing to do that because this book was awesome !!!
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Firstly, this will be a spoiler free review. If you want to know what happens in the story, read it. Secondly, Broken Knight can be read as a standalone, I have not read the stories of Knight or Luna’s parents.
Broken Knight is a teenage drama on steroids. It is an angst filled love story and I couldn’t put it down. My emotions were all over the place with Knight and Luna. My heart was ripped out more than once and not just by Knight and Luna. Tears were shed. There were plenty of highs and lows and times of wanting to smack Knight and Luna’s heads together in frustration. Just when you thought everything was going to go well, something would happen and the drama would roll on. But among the crazy drama there is one scene (Knight watering the garden) that out of nowhere had me laughing.
When I was reading about these characters that I quickly fell in love with, and they were driving me nuts with their inability to get their act together, I had to remember they are teenagers. Their immaturity, bad decisions, inability to communicate were all entirely age appropriate. So were some of the completely cringe worthy and jaw droppingly stupid things they did and said out of pain and jealousy.
Broken Knight is another brilliant story from LJ Shen. It is emotional, frustrating, heart crunching and I totally loved it.
