Deep cleansing breath in… and out… You need to prepare yourself for one heck of a story. What I have learned is that LJ Shen takes me on a journey that breaks me down into pieces slowly before piecing me back together like a patch work quilt. Luna and Knight both have loving families and yet face issues of abandonment and feel unworthy of love and affection to some extent. Most times, they don’t realise how it affects them and others it is plain to see how those issues impact their daily lives. I won’t say too much about the story but there are misunderstandings, guilt, anger and above all love. The story touches on some very sensitive issues and it squeezes your heart. The pain and loss suffered by the characters impacts the reader. It is a testament to LJ Shen’s writing because she invokes these feelings in her readers. But she also includes some beautiful and inspirational messages into the story. There is so much love and hope weaved into the story that you become a mess of emotions experiencing so many highs and lows. I just love reading about the Hotholes and their children.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Firstly, this will be a spoiler free review. If you want to know what happens in the story, read it. Secondly, Broken Knight can be read as a stand alone, I have not read the stories of Knight or Luna’s parents.
Broken Knight is a teenage drama on steroids. It is an angst filled love story and I couldn’t put it down. My emotions were all over the place with Knight and Luna. My heart was ripped out more than once and not just by Knight and Luna. Tears were shed. There were plenty of highs and lows and times of wanting to smack Knight and Luna’s heads together in frustration. Just when you thought everything was going to go well, something would happen and the drama would roll on. But among the crazy drama there is one scene (Knight watering the garden) that out of nowhere had me laughing.
When I was reading about these characters that I quickly fell in love with, and they were driving me nuts with their inability to get their act together, I had to remember they are teenagers. Their immaturity, bad decisions, inability to communicate were all entirely age appropriate. So were some of the completely cringe worthy and jaw droppingly stupid things they did and said out of pain and jealousy.
Broken Knight is another brilliant story from LJ Shen. It is emotional, frustrating, heart crunching and I totally loved it.
This book has left me a shattered and sobbing wreck. It hits all the highs. Knight and Luna’s story reconnects precious books and characters so if you’ve read LJ Shens other books you feel like part of the family. There love story is a rush of highs and lows so brilliantly written that it leaves you breathless for the next page. Heartbreaking and breathtaking, one of the best books of 2019. Get the tissues!!!!
