If you unscrew the cap with the straw/filter attached it it, you can look up under the top and see a little lock/unlock symbol (check the picture for reference). All you have to do is screw it just a little bit in the direction that it tells you for locking it. This wasn’t made too obvious, but now it works as intended. I don’t tilt the bottle like a regular gravity-fed water bottle; just use the straw as you would a regular straw with the bottle standing vertically.
You don’t have to keep the lid screwed on less tight as other reviews have suggested. This locking into place trick should make the bottle work normally. If not, maybe there’s another issue.
Like I said, I can’t give a full on review but just wanted to help people out before they think there’s something wrong with the bottle and decide to return it!

I don't notice too much difficulty using the straw, but this could be because I'm used to sucking a little harder for water. My old bottle is a 40oz metal bottle and the straw took a little more effort than normal straws to bring up water, so switching to this one felt fine. I guess if you're a normal user, the straw may feel like it'll take a bit of effort to use, but I don't experience much difficulty.
