Product description

Product Description

When siblings Dan and Hayley Daley inherit their late grandmother’s derelict Victorian farmhouse, it seems like a dream come true. All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit!

Except—as anyone who has renovated an old house knows—things are never that easy.

The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling…and then there’s the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

On top of all this, the renovation is being featured on a daytime reality TV show, and as soon as Great Locations presenter Gerard O’Keefe catches sight of Hayley’s first-floor balcony, he’s determined to woo her out of her ban on romance, whether she wants him to or not.

Will Dan and Hayley survive and sell up? Or will the whole thing collapse on them like a ton of bricks?

From bestselling author Nick Spalding comes a hilarious tale of life, love and dodgy plumbing.

Never having read a Nick Spalding book I had no idea what to expect. As it was in the top 10 Amazon list I thought I'd give it a try - so pleased I did! This was the perfect read for me as the story was hilarious, embarrassing, realistic, and uplifting. Siblings Danny and Hayley Daley have been left a Victorian farmhouse by their grandmother. Unfortunately, the property has been abandoned for decades and is in Terrible disrepair. With the house potentially worth four times more renovated, they decide to renovate the house however, they have no experience in home renovation and not much money. Deciding to renovate changes their lives. Adding to the normal hysteria associated with renovating, the house is being filmed for a home improvement show, the architect is from a different planet and the contractor has a cockney accent that I loved to read out loud! The renovation has plenty of ups and downs, which means lots of comedy for the reader. You will die laughing when Gerard and the Great Locations crew arrive for the live filming show; one of the funniest scenes I've read. The author has created a funny, but also very clever, story. The characters are well-developed with very interesting personalities. I am very glad I decided to read this book - it made my weekend!

Having never read this author before I wasn't sure what to expect, reality comedies very rarely are!! This had me laughing so hard, I had to take a break. It's well written, then characters believable, the humour magnificent... I'm off to find more of this authors books!

I can honestly say that this is one of the very few books I have read in all my life that has made me laugh uncontrollably out loud. And not just once but several times in the book. I can't recommend reading this enough. Definitely buy this! The story was well written, engaging, very funny, very likeable main characters, and an overall great read.

this is my second Nick Spalding book, and like the first "Fat Chance", its a tale of mishap and humour. This is not a detailed look into the pitfalls of house renovation. If you are looking for a book of in depth analysis then Nick Spalding is not for you. But...if you are looking for light, enjoyable reading with a lot of laughter inducing situations and memorable characters along the way, then read this book. Interaction with Pat the Cow is memorable, as is the interview with Gerard from the BBC program "Great Locations" when he decides, when doing a live episode on the BBC on the renovations progress, to check just what is up the chimney.

The book is full of amusing and off beat characters, probably some a little hard to believe, but this is about entertainment really not about how factual you can be. I found myself putting this book down more than once and going to do something ordinary to recover from the real, out loud laughter and coughing fits it caused me. For the record I'm nearly 70 and I found several situations in this story worth more than a laugh or two.

The ending was as you would expect, if a little too convenient.

I've given it four stars because I enjoyed every minute of it, and no, it was not literary genius but for the amusement value and a reasonably good storyline, it was worth it.

This book was hilarious! It caught my eye with the nice read cover and I thought I would give it a go since it seemed to be a popular read on Amazon.

This is just one of those quick and easy reads that will actually make you snort/cry with laughter. Some of the things that happen to Hayley and Danny during the renovations of the Victorian farmhouse are pretty out there, but my goodness it was funny. Luckily I was reading this book in the comfort of my own home on a Sunday morning. I'm not too sure if the peak hour commuters would appreciate the laugh out loud moments of this book as much as I did!

I'll definitely be on the lookout for more novels by Nick Spalding.

Light reading and laugh out loud funny in parts. I enjoyed this book as it told a story well, and kept me engaged to the end, although some of it is predictable.

I would recommend for a lighthearted, easy to read story.

Once I grew accustomed to Nick's humour, I couldn't wait for the next event/disaster.
It had me in stitches reading how the siblings came to terms with their new life, and oh boy, how I wish I could have met their grandmother!!
I give I FIVE stars for a great read.

Just a good fun laugh story much needed in today's busy hectic life. I really like the way Nick throws something in the story which you didn't expect, in this one a cow and a bomb focus prominently and a mysterious Grandmother who takes the cake. It is good to have books about present day that are about ordinary people, not rich, not spies or gangsters and you can easily imagine yourself in the well described situation.
