Good Enough Isn't
For the son of the greatest Devicers in history, it is not enough just to pass the Journeyman Project.
An Apprentice is nothing. Not even a real rank, just an opportunity. Breyik is nothing.
Tonight, Breyik faces Master Takkri's judgement in the Journeyman Project. Tonight, he takes the first step in surpassing his parents' legacy. He has left nothing to chance. Breyik has studied the Devices of the past, mastered forces beyond what most Journeyman can control, and placed all of his knowledge and power on display.
But Master Takkri may not be as old-fashioned as he is old. When the master changes the rules of the game, everything Breyik thought he knew about Devicing is thrown into doubt. And that is only the beginning of his challenges.
Epic Fantasy, but Not a Doorstop
But epic fantasy novels are supposed to be doorstops! They're supposed to hurt to hold for long periods of time (well, before Kindles, anyway).
Actually, I agree. I love to read long, engrossing epic fantasies. I love to get lost for hours and forget the real world exists.
But in my real world, I'm a father. I don't have those hours now. I have commutes and business trips to tuck in a good book. Breyik is good for that. There's an engrossing fantasy world to explore and digest, a character and quest to root for, and you can get through both on a car ride or flight.
Breyik won't hurt your arms. It might even be lighter in print than your Kindle. It won't stop a door unless you fold the book in half and wedge it underneath. (Seriously, buy an actual doorstop if that's what you want.) But it will entertain and it fits easily into your busy life.
Oh, and There's More to Come
Don't worry, you're not going to fall in love with Breyik just to be left hanging at the end. This is only the beginning of his story and there will be much more to come.
But for now, kick back with Breyik the Apprentice and a cup of coffee for a break from the daily grind.
