I realised how confusing the whole Brexit debate must have been when well-educated & travelled, apparently politically aware and sophisticated 30-something year olds were categoric as to how they intended to vote, yet an hour later they voted the other way. Sebastian's 'Brexit - How the Nobodies Beat the Somebodies' was recommended to me, and I am so pleased they did. A fascinating insight to what really happened. Well done Sebastian.

Not having cast a vote in the UK for over 40 years, I was intrigued by how angrily polarised the community became over Brexit, especially when the case for leaving seemed so obvious to me as a long-term 'leaver'. Then along comes Sebastian Handley's book, which lays the bones bare on how he and other similarly frustrated English men and women took on the smug, self-entitled class and tossed them out! Awesome. A quintessentially British revolution, apparently this is how it happened. And to think that without the murder of Jo Cox on June 16th it could well have been a 5%-6% margin, rather than the 1.5% it ended up being. A wonderful read, which I could not commend more highly. Sebastian for PM?

Brexit. How the hell did it happen? OK, I confess that if I had been allowed to vote in the land of my birth, I would have voted Remain. But Sebastian Handley's 'Brexit: How the Nobodies beat the Somebodies' gave me a long pause for quite a lot of thought. He wouldn't have persuaded me to vote Leave, but his book gives a rare opportunity for insight into the thinking of a committed Brexit campaigner, and is a valuable corrective to the 'them vs us' smear that characterised a lot of the so-called debate around Brexit. Handley's book is highly original, and as such difficult to categorise: Memoir? Handbook for revolutionaries? Political manifesto? Structurally, it's couched as a breathless series of diary entries. Stylistically, it's Spike Milligan meets The Young Ones (influences Handley acknowledges at the beginning of the book). The narrative voice is somewhere on a cline from faux-naif to skilled orator. There's also a love story woven into the gaps between Handley's indefatigable campaigning for Leave in Brighton. And in the end, Handley answers the question 'How the hell did it happen?' Through quintessentially British amateurism, with small squads of loosely connected enthusiasts bashing out leaflets and learning how to dodge the slow-moving ideological missiles of the Remainers. If like me, you're still baffled by the Brexit vote, this is essential reading. If you're a Leaver, read How the Nobodies beat the Somebodies, and have a well-deserved gloat!

Exceptional account of a local leave campaign

Sebastian Handley, a Brighton-based singer, songwriter and performance poet, has written one of the very best books on the referendum campaign and certainly the most entertaining.
Thousands of individual campaigners like Handley and local groups like the Brighton Brexit Group helped to win the majority vote to leave, against the establishment. Reactionaries (Osborne, Cameron, Goldman Sachs, the City of London Corporation, etc.) backed the EU.
As Sebastian asserts, “The argument for independence really was a progressive argument for ordinary people to be able to vote for better laws and leaders. The only reason why Guardian readers tended to disagree was because they conflated the EU with a progressivism that it didn’t deserve, and Brexit with a right-wing agenda that we didn’t deserve either.”
As he observes, “The Brexit referendum was never a choice about what laws to have but about how laws were to be written. When I entered the polling booth the question in front of me didn’t mention immigration, environmentalism or rights, it was about how, where and by whom legislation would be made.”
Many EU enthusiasts denounced nationalism while claiming to be citizens of a nation called the EU, with its own flag, anthem, president, parliament, court, legal system and army. Handley comments that for some “Europe was no longer a political idea but a religious belief. The Remain campaign was a classic example of conservatives accusing empiricists of heresy.” Some EU supporters accused their opponents of being ‘far right’ to hide that it was the other way round: some “supporters of the EU were everything they claimed to despise: angry, irrational, conservative nationalists who attacked democracy with unfalsifiable pseudo-science.”
Think of the reforms passed in the 43 years before we joined the EU: the NHS, the welfare state and the green belt; the Race Relations Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Sex Discrimination Act and the Clean Air Act; decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing the death penalty. Contrast that with the EU ‘reforms’ in the 43 years since we joined: the privatisations, the Big Bang, the bailing out of the bankers, endless austerity, wage cuts, public spending cuts, creating the euro (promptly stopping economies from growing), creating the Schengen Area (promptly stopping workers getting pay rises), creating an El Dorado for tax dodgers, all while claiming to have given us rights (rights we already had). Pollution, inequality, unemployment, homelessness, debt, all increased.
The supreme authority in Britain is not the monarch or Parliament, it is the people. Parliament is subject to the people, not vice versa. Power flows from the people. Parliament is only legitimate because people voted for its members.
Some MPs and peers don’t get that the highest authority in the land has declared independence and they act as if they have the right to reverse our decision. They don’t. MPs who deny our decision deny their own legitimacy.
On campaigning, Sebastian suggests paying Facebook to promote posts: choose a few posts, decide how much you want to spend, tag them, choose the age/gender of recipients and press Go. Then check which got the most shares to help aim the next post. By polling day his page had 522 followers, but every £5 promotion got it on 1,500 people’s time lines.
Delivering leaflets door-to-door is one of the best effective ways to campaign. It gets your arguments into people’s homes, so people have to look at them even if just to bin them. They see that your campaign is alive. It bypasses the media. From a street stall you may only hand out 50 leaflets in a day, but you can deliver leaflets into 50 homes every hour.

As a Conservative, Francophile Republican who escaped England before it joined the EU, I have to say I would have voted for independence from the Brussels dictatorship. Handley brings to mind Grey's line, 'Some little Hampden that with dauntless breast...etc' Truly the triumph of the amateur over the professional, 'the man on the tram' over the 'bien pensants'. So wonderfully English!
Handley seems, well...'different' but what a hero!
I was particularly struck by his thoughts on academe. It brought to mind one of my favourite sayings, 'If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can always rely on Paul!'
This book is a 'must read' for anyone interested in contemporary politics. It's well and concisely written - often in the vernacular, always from the heart.
I hope that the Handley mob now wear Obama tee shirts. His comments probably got them over the line!
