Every time the top lid is opened, so as to fill the machine with water and coffee, it dumps what appears to be half a cup of water (that has condensed on the underside of the top lid during use) on the kitchen bench top. Behind the coffee maker too, so the coffee maker has to be moved out of the way, the kitchen bench wiped down, and the coffee maker moved back into its designated spot. Every. Single. Time. Because of lazy design.
A simple redesign of the hinged top lid would have solved this problem, and I cannot believe Breville didn't run into this issue during product testing. Unless there was no testing. Now, in reality it's not a half a cup of water, but enough to fully saturate a sheet of paper towel until it's dripping wet.
So... two sheets of paper towel are required, and the machine must be moved out of the way in order to clean up behind it, each and every time the coffee maker is refilled. All that unnecessary effort, just because Breville couldn't be bothered to design it properly. But... it does make good coffee.
The machine is easy to use for just the two of us, - and big enough to serve the Family when they visit.
The coffee is lovely and hot and we love the way it keeps hot for two hours if required.
I saw that some people complain about the water tank not being easily accessible. I don't find that at all. Just use a good pouring jug - and if you still can't manage, use a small plastic Watering Can with a long spout, designed for hanging baskets. ( We use a plastic jug)
Some people also complain about water condensation dripping down the back of the machine when they open the lid. I haven't had that problem either. The back of the machine has got a lip, to catch any drips, which is then fed back into the tank.
The machine is easy to clean, it makes great Coffee ( if you're not happy with the coffee, experiment with other brands.)
We like our coffee strong and flavourful, so we're quite generous with the amount we spoon into the filter basket. You only get out what you put in. (We froth our milk in a induction frothing jug from Woolies to top up our coffees to perfection.)
I enthuse about this machine to everyone. It's easy to use and we don't need to pay a fortune for those lousy little pods any more.
Another thing that I love. 💕
I ordered this Breville around lunch time on a Thursday and it was dispatched the same day and delivered Friday morning to another Regional City. Also with accompanying Emails telling me of it's progress. Now that's service. Thanks Amazon 👍
My husband sets up the timer so that our coffee is freshly brewed when we wake up in the morning (he was really surprised at how easy it was, he was expecting it to be a frustrating process).
The hot plate keeps the coffee at the perfect temperature so no more having to throw out cold coffee because in your morning rush you forgot to drink it!
Overall the machine quality is a good standard (as I expected from Breville) and easy to clean. The bit where you pour in the water is a bit small and sometimes i spill it but that’s not really a serious issue.
Note: We did previously check out a sunbeam coffee filter machine in a local homeware store but it looked much cheaper quality than the Breville.
Pros: Huge 12 cup pot, no grit in your cup thanks to the fine mesh filter, no need for filter paper(instructions say don't use filter paper), not an Nespresso, set and forget timer, great tasting coffee!
Cons: coffee could be a little bit hotter(but 10secs in the microwave fixes that), the water tank inlet mouth could be a bit bigger to avoid spillage, clock/timer with battery backup(if you unplug it, you have to redo the clock).
Definitely a recommended purchase.
Other than that little annoyance I am very happy with it. It's easy to clean and to fill with water. Many people complained about the water that drips from the top when you open the top lid. The simple solution to that is to open it halfway for 10 seconds, all the condensation runs back into the unit. You can open it all the way and no mess on your countertop.
