What a great debut novel.
I can recommend this even if you dont like dystopian stories

Review
Fletcher's suspenseful, atmospheric tale imagines a near future in which our world is in ruins... An adventure saga punctured by a gut-punch twist -- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
Epic in scope, enthralling, and full of human warmth -- M. R. Carey, author of THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS
This novel has everything I love about a story: fully realised characters, beautiful writing, and utterly believable, even frightening, world-building . . . I promise you're going to love it -- Louisa Morgan, author of A SECRET HISTORY OF WITCHES
A story that is as heart-warming as it is heart-breaking . . . I'm still thinking about this book, weeks after finishing it -- FANTASY HIVE
Family, loyalty, and humanity amid the lonely but beautiful wilderness of the end of the world - with a gut punch you'll never see coming. That twist! That ending! You'll remember A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World long after you finish reading -- Peng Shepherd, author of THE BOOK OF M
Extraordinary and quite magnificent . . . 10/10 -- STARBURST
A stunningly gorgeous read: masterful storytelling, searingly beautiful prose, and a world so meticulously rendered you'll forget there's a real one going on beyond the pages ... A book of the year contender - in any year -- Micah Yongo
Playful, twisty, thought provoking and hugely enjoyable -- RJ Barker
A truly engrossing survival story, which gives us a haunting vision of a ruined Britain that's both dangerous and strangely beautiful. But the real strength of the book its utterly believable lead character whose interplay of vulnerability and strength brings hope and humanity to a cold and scary world -- Keith Stuart, author of A BOY MADE OF BLOCKS
Fletcher does a masterful job keeping the stakes high and the suspense crackling while still creating plenty of space for readers to get to know Griz and explore this fascinating not-quite-empty world. This un-put-down-able story has everything-a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs -- KIRKUS (starred review)

A firmly OK book.

If you are looking for a post-apocalyptic page turner, then this is a reasonable choice. The story and pacing is lively, and paints an interesting picture of a ruined world (and how people have coped with it).
It is, however, firmly a young-adult book, with childish tropes and plot lines to match. The writing is frequently cliched and "cookie cutter" in thought and structure. For example, every five pages or so the author defaults to a tacky tabloid story telling method, saying something akin to "It was a very good day. Until it wasn't." Seriously, this method for building suspense (a poor-man's alternative to actually suspenseful writing) happens AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN, sometimes with slight variations ("I was so glad to find this item. But I didn't know that it would ultimately be my downfall!") and greatly cheapens the experience. For the atrocious writing style alone I can only give it three stars.

I’d give this TEN STARS if I could! Best book I’ve read this year!

A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World is a book that grabs you from the very first page. I was intrigued to know how Griz ending up living in an island of the coast of Scotland in a world that was unrecognisable to me. What had happened to the population and why? This is touched upon but really this is just the story of a boy and his dog and the lengths that we go to for our dearest, most trusted companions. It is an apocalyptic odyssey about family, set in a dangerous world that’s very far removed from the one that we understand or is it? It’s a constant struggle for survival and the journey that Griz takes is heartbreaking but also heartwarming at the same time! We recognise places and things that are commonplace in our world but that have now become an oddity in this survivors lifestyle. There’s an innocence to Griz that contrasts with the world that exists away from the safety of the family island and the way in which this is explored evoked many emotions in me. It’s just such a sumptuous book from start to finish! It is beautifully written with unexpected twists (no I didn’t see them coming!) that felt so organically evolved they made me cry! And I just loved the way the narrative presented them. In fact as soon as I finished the last sentence, I wanted to go back to the start and read it all over again.
Charmingly told by a character that you will struggle to get out of your head, A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World is a triumph of originality. And just writing this review has once again stirred those emotions I felt whilst reading it. Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!
Very highly recommended by me!

This is a childrens book.

If I had been twelve or thirteen years old I probably would've enjoyed this book a lot more than I did. But as an adult I found the unfolding story unengaging, the rather simplistic writing style a bit tedious and the main characters view of this post apocalyptic world unrealistic. Any knowledge he did possess was justified by books he had read but he failed to recognise a wind turbine although his family home did possess a windmill! A good book for younger readers but it certainly shouldn't have been aimed at the adult market.

a very memorable read

For most of this book, it was a solid 4 star read for me. I enjoyed it throughout, finding myself particularly drawn to the narrator and main protagonist Griz. Griz is a young boy who lives with his family in a future world where humans have nearly died out due to an inability to procreate. They live on a remote island where they are mostly self-sufficient and hardly ever see another human. Then, one day a red-haired stranger arrives on a boat wishing to make a trade. Brand, the stranger makes a deal with Grizs' father and everything appears well, until the next morning when Griz wakes up to find his family poisoned and discovers Brand is gone and has stolen one of his dogs, Jess. Without even thinking, Griz launches himself into a boat and chases after him, soon embarking on an epic journey to and across the mainland. What I enjoyed about the story was the character of Griz and his absolute determination to get his dog back. The bond between him and his dogs, Jess and Jip was something I can definitely relate to, and his fearless endeavors to put his life in danger in order to rescue Jess was completely endearing. The adventures he had whilst searching for Jess were tense and dramatic, to say the least, and the whole time I was absolutely desperate for him to be reunited with Jess. The ending though!! Two massive twists I did not see coming which tipped this into a 5-star review for me. No spoilers...you will just have to read it for yourself. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a character-driven adventure story set in a post-apocalyptic world about the love between a human and his dogs...topped with twists I will be thinking about for some time. Brilliant.

A book for the post modern era
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2019Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I’m a fan of dystopia (the genre rather than the reality). This book will hold itself as being memorable. The time and location is perfect; so long after the near extinction of the human race brings the rich green nature of the world to the forefront. The characters, are unsurprisingly few, but they betray people with a sense of realism. The protagonist Griz is the perfect travelling companion, taking you through England. The relationship between Griz and John Dark is so brilliantly told. I really enjoyed this book!
