After a few weeks now, I connected the optical cable as well and now the entire thing works!! Including automatically turning on the Tv and off as well!! No idea why connecting the optical cable made such a difference, but everything works now and the sound is great...but I think a subwoofer is needed. Folks, who are having trouble with HDMI etc, just connect an optical cable and everything works for some reason. Also, Bose updates the SW...you can now use a google assistant instead of Alexa. I tried GA for a while and went back to Alexa..seems a lot more responsive to me.
This is absurd, given that Alexa is integrated into the device and all I have to do is say "Alexa play xxx on Amazon Music" and voila, music streams from Amazon Music!
Why have such agreements to force people to pay more when the service is available anyway?

Lot of Googling as all the required info for I suppose Dummies is not in one location from unpacking the box, connecting, use of app and remote. Having wanted a Bose product for years this aspect frustrated and disappointed me. I was replacing a Sony Soundbar and subwoofer with the Bose 700 soundbar, when I purchased the Sony it came with all the information
Set-up was *not* seemless and was very buggy (stressful!). After connecting all the plugs, it *requires* you to set it up via an app (which is not as easy as making it ready to go out of the box). After signing my life away, the first real problems were encountered.
First, the soundbar started downloading the firmware update, but after a while the status light stopped moving and went off and then nothing at all happened for a long time. It appeared the process had fallen over. I had to look up a fix, then disconnect my router, remove the soundbar power supply, and restart the app and turn everything back on again. Throughout this all you get nothing on the ARC HDMI channel (why didn't they create some interface to show on the TV, beyond the app logo, is beyond me!)
This seemed to resolve the issue and the soundbar then went into updating its firmware, and then the second problem reared its head - it got stuck in that mode! This time it took a wider internet search, to discover on a Bose customer forum that this was not an uncommon issue with this soundbar, and again you had to disconnect the router, use the remote to reset the soundbar, hold the interaction button on the soundbar 10 seconds, and then restart the app (phew!). This finally worked and the soundbar was finally talking to the app and providing sound.
The whole set-up process though was fraught and confusing, and I was on the verge of repacking it to return it before I managed to get it sorted. So not very impressed at all, especially given this is supposed to be a prestige brand.
Also not a fan of the remote where most of the buttons are invisible, unless you can get the backlight to spring on (unnecessarily complicated), but it works when you can find the button.
However, despite all this I am holding fire and giving an initial rating of 3 stars, subject to a longer term review.
Sound wise, I am probably not the best judge (being a little deaf), but it gave me some sense of spatial movement (the Choice review didn't rate the 700 soundbar on its own very high though).
Will update review after an extended road test.
