Born For This: How to Find the Work You Were Meant to Do Kindle Edition
From the Back Cover
The international bestselling author of The $100 Startup shows us how to enjoy greater career success and personal fulfilment by finding the work we were born to do, whether within a traditional company or business, or by striking out on our own.
Chris Guillebeau knows better than most that there's no single model for what a dream career should look like. After all, he has enjoyed a lifetime of meaningful self-employment as an author, entrepreneur and modern-day explorer, with 'jobs' that have included visiting every country in the world before his thirty-fifth birthday and penning three bestselling books.
In Born For This Guillebeau shows readers how to create their own self-styled career, offering a practical, step-by-step guide for finding the work that feels so perfect it doesn't even feel like work, whether by launching a 'side hustle' that turns a passion into a profitable business, winning the 'career lottery' by finding a dream position within a traditional organization, becoming a 'DIY rock star' by fashioning an entirely new profession around all of one's many varied interests, or 'hacking' an existing humdrum job into work they love.
Whatever you care about in your personal and professional life, Guillebeau offers an actionable method and framework for turning your passions into pay cheques.

Chris Guillebeau's writing style is conversational and friendly in tone, which won't appeal to everyone — but this book wasn't written for everyone. It has been written for people who share a certain philosophy: who want to challenge themselves and lead a fun, satisfying life which benefits both themselves and others. People who have realised that the conventional careers model we are sold rarely exists anymore and doesn't suit everyone anyway.
Born for This provides you with a starting point for exploring career options. It begins with chapters on the best strategies to adopt — how to increase your chances of success (hint: it involves playing the right game in the first place) and which skills to develop. It then presents different career models, including You, Inc (considering yourself as a company), side hustles, the self-employed employee and (my favourite) the DIY rockstar. The principles explained are demonstrated with accounts of people who have made their careers and lives work for themselves, basing their choices on personal priorities rather than mainstream goals. I found these accounts very helpful — while the types of work undertaken were often very different to the work I do, learning about how real people have taken control of their careers yielded a lot of practical advice which I can (and will) use.
I recommend Born for This to anyone who feels they don't fit into conventional career roles. As someone with long term mental health problems, my own career path has been... interesting. Now that I am well enough to work, I need to find ways to work around my mental illness and to work with the constraints involved, not against them. This book has inspired me and reminded me that my aims are achievable.
Some good pointers to take away and implement into my own life.
In a fashion that is typical of Chris Guillebeau, this book is filled with real life examples of people finding the work they were born to do, even if it took them multiple starts. He doesn't sugar coat that the journey can be hard, but that it is totally worth it! Best of all, many of the chapters are filled with actions and exercises you can do immediately to figure out what it is you are born to do. I especially liked all of the ideas in the Chapter called "The Answer In Your Inbox".
If you are someone who is unhappy in your current job, or even just looking to start something on the side. Pick this book up, you won't regret it!
