The Border may indeed be fictional. However, Winslow 's chilling narrative of a corrupt and greedy America is astounding! The juxtaposition of the most powerful nation on Earth with its third world neighbours exposes the faultlines of a system that gives a "democratic" nation almost unlimited power to its government and its leader. The horrific treatment of children in lawless South American states is almost too much for the reader to digest! Winslow makes it clear that he abhors leaders like Trump! He also points the finger at a gullible nation who treat corrupt leaders like actors in a miniseries! All in all a fantastic novel!
This final chapter in Winslow’s sprawling dope-war trilogy does not disappoint. It’s testament to the power of his storytelling and the depth of his characters that I feel like going straight back to the Power of the Dog and starting all over again. Highly recommended!
