Dawn Edelstein knows everything there is to know about dying. She specialises in helping her clients make peace with the end of their lives. But as she's flying home from her latest case, she is forced to confront her own mortality for the first time.
Instead of seeing her brilliant quantum physicist husband and their beloved daughter flash before her eyes in what she assumes are her last moments, only one face is shockingly clear: Wyatt Armstrong.
Safely on the ground, Dawn now faces a desperate decision. Should she return to Boston, her family and the life she knows, or journey back to an Egyptian archaeological site she left over a decade earlier, reconnect with Wyatt, and finally finish her abandoned magnum opus, The Book of Two Ways?
As the story unfolds, Dawn must confront the questions she's never truly answered: What does a life well-lived look like? When we depart this earth, what do we leave behind of ourselves? And who would you be if you hadn't turned out to be the person you are right now?

It is hard to exaggerate how well Picoult writes ― Financial Times
A wise, cerebral, propulsive adventure . . . Similar to Alice Hoffman's depiction of complex family ties, Picoult's latest stretches the importance of recognizing our bonds to those we love. Highly recommended for open-minded readers. ― Library Journal, starred review
The Book of Two Ways is a return for Picoult to the themes of her earliest books -motherhood, complicated romantic love . . . Picoult, at this point in her career, could skilfully build tension in a broom closet, but the best part of this book is not the suspense; it's the look at the complexity of a woman as she enters middle age . . . [Picoult] always tells both sides of a story not with judgment, but with grace. ― Washington Post
Picoult's fans will appreciate this multifaceted, high concept work. ― Publishers Weekly

Her work has always been 4 stars, and her most recent (until now) 5 stars.
But no matter how much I wished it, I couldn't develop the fascination with Egyptology required for immersion in this novel. Quantum mechanics, while more interesting, didn't need to be so detailed either; not for me, anyway.
And yet the characters, the themes, the honest focus on death and dying - all excellent.
There's so much to love and admire about The Book of Two Ways; and so much that had me skipping whole sections.
And Jodi: I wish you hadn't given in to your editor's advice about the ending.
I miss her standard medical dilemma followed by a court case books!
I found the Egyptian explanations hard going and although i get the two ways bit i would have liked to know Dawns ending.
Briliant reading.

Paid £9.99 on kindle.
Very over priced.
Looking forward to this too.
Usually love her books.
Too much detail about egypt, felt more like a history lesson than a novel.
Not happy I wasted £10 to end up deleting after 2 chapters.
Do amazon really need to charge so expensive for kindle downloads.
I know it's a new release but it's not a hard copy.
I wish I would have download a sample of book first,
But I pre ordered it on the back of authors other amazing books.
Her books are usually fantastic.
But this one wasnt for me.
Sorry jodi. X

I will normally persevere with a book, especially when I spend £10 on it, but this time I’ve abandoned it. I was so disappointed as I’d been so looking forward to reading this book. Next time I will download a trial before I buy it.

However. There are substantial sections of the long chapters that are taken up with information you would learn on a course about Egyptology. Reading the authors notes it is clear that this book was written for her son, who has studied Egyptology in depth, so nice touch.
The thing is I totally understand the need to show that you have done your research, but this element of the book comes across as too educational and moves away from the story. It can feel a bit lazy when an author does this too. "I have a story, it needs some meat on the bones, what can I do...ooh I know I will educate my readers with a history lesson and some cool pictures" It doesn't work.
The story in this book is actually fascinating, I really bought into the the two story lines, I liked the relationship that the man character has for the two men in her life, with the twists and turns that go with it. The overdoes of history just distracts too much.
Dial it back a bit on the history and just give us the amazing stories covering the great subjects moving forward.

predictable. No proper ending. Definitely not worth the £9.99 I spent.
