Product Description

How Much Dog Hair Does it Take to Heal a Broken Heart?  Jet pilot turned LEO investigator L.B Johnson.thought she had the world by the tail, until a bundle of mayhem disguised as a lab puppy came into her life.  After heartbreak as a young teen Mom, and witnessing too much violence for one lifetime, she wasn't going to get too attached to another living creature, but Barkley had other plans for her.
The Amazon #1 Best Seller "The Book of Barkley: Love and Life Through the Eyes of a Labrador Retriever" takes readers from the author's depths of grief and loss at a young age to an empowering new life chock-full of love. But Johnson's radical life change didn't come from just her renewed faith in God or from friends, but instead from a black Labrador called Barkley who taught her the real, innate meaning of love.

In a wholly-unique and uplifting new memoir, Johnson tells the deeply-personal story of her life and experiences with a rambunctious Labrador Retriever named Barkley. It's not just a story of one woman and her dog; but a bold journey to discover what love really is, and why learning to live like a dog gives humanity a powerful new meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars And I liked that part the best 22 September 2014

Some books are entertainment. Some are mere time-passers. But occasionally, a book comes along that teaches you about yourself and your place in the world, as another tells their story. This is such a book. It is both a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit, and how our human existence is enriched by our furry friends, but also a story of personal redemption, and healing. This is a story of a journey. A journey that will tug your heartstrings and your tear ducts. But ultimately, it's a story about triumph. And I liked that part the best. Ms. Johnson writes with a style that harkens back to an age when written words were to be savored and contemplated. She also has a keen and humorous wit that lightens and brightens the tale at all the right spots. In an overcomplicated, busy world, The Book of Barkley, is a much needed reminder to all of us to never forget the things that are truly important. I highly recommend this book, and am already eagerly anticipating L.B's next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have ever loved a dog... 15 September 2014

This is THE book for anyone who has loved a dog. LB Johnson writes with skill and a flair for humor, and Barkley provided her with ample opportunities to engage the reader with his antics. Though the story touches on many aspects of growing up in 1960's-70's America, a life and time that resonates with many of us, the story concentrates on how one dog changes one woman's life, for the better.

I read this book after having lost my own beloved Charlie. I found the book brought back many fond memories of my dog, which made the reading more intense and memorable. I hope LB Johnson has many more stories to tell, for I will be quite happy to read them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down 1 August 2014

Run, don't walk to buy this book.
If you have ever had a very special 4 legged dog friend, you have to read this story. But, fair warning, be sure you have a box of Kleenex close by as you will laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. Also be warned, it is very hard to put down until the last page. Ms. Johnson is a very talented writer, gifted with the ability to draw you in while she writes a story of love, loss, and rising above the pain to remember and cherish the love and lessons learned from a pair of brown eyes and lots of dog hair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her snapshots-in-time deliver an amazing story woven of loss 25 September 2014

L.B. Johnson shares her life with a companion having four paws, an intimidating bark, and the biggest heart and soul found in a black, furry package. Her snapshots-in-time deliver an amazing story woven of loss, love, and soul-searching with a perfect seasoning of humor "...and he sounds like Johnny Cash!" I laughed and cried, have re-read this twice (so far!) and shared snippets with strong encouragement to friends to get their own copy so they can experience Barkley and L.B., too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Lab opens your heart. 6 October 2014

This telling of a love found and allowing one's heart to be vulnerable to hurt again is wonderfully written with both poignant verse and outright humor. L.B. Johnson is a delight to read. Wish I could write 1/4 as well---I know, I know, some say I do.

If you've ever given your heart to a fur baby and felt the sting of loss, then this book could help you with perspective.

I highly recommend it, if for no other reason than to float in the words so elegantly strung together that you'll laugh, you'll cry and you will come away refreshed with hope.
