The book of all skies is phenomenal. As always, I will refrain from making any hint as to what the story is about since this would inevitably spoil the fun of discovering it. But I need to say this: He has completely outdone himself in the "alternative universe" genre. The world he creates here is so alien and yet so familiar. He plays with ideas on progress, society and humanity and there is not a single moment that is dull. What is new (at least for me) is his foray into linguistics. I thought it was enjoyable, as he has his very own take on that, too.

If there is one thing I did not fully like about the book of all skies, it is the lead characters. They are reasonably likely and convincing, but compared to some characters in his previous novels, they are a bit less fleshed out and interesting. But this really is very minor - even in this department he is head and shoulders above most of what is out there, especially in SciFi.

So if you would like to read a book by an intelligent author, with intelligent protagonists that have to figure out a completely alien world and its inhabitants, where deep ideas abound, where every character is logically and emotionally understandable and where adventure awaits at every corner, go and read the book of all skies. You will not be disappointed. And who knows, maybe you will develop a strange nostalgia for old Jierra, as I did.

Greg Egan, wie ich finde der beste Science Fiction Autor unserer Zeit, schreibt auf gewisse Art und Weise in seinem ganz eigenen Subgenre, am besten zu umschreiben als "Verstehe die Regeln dieser Welt". Wo andere die Geschichte auf einem anderen fremdartigen Planeten spielen lassen, spielen Egan's Geschichten in einem jeweils anderen Universum mit eigenen Regeln, bspw. zwei Raum- und zwei Zeit-Dimensionen in Dichronauts oder das Universum in seiner Orthogonal-Trilogie. The Book of All Skies ist von all diesen Büchern das zugänglichste, die Protagonisten müssen zwar herausfinden wie Ihre Welt funktioniert, aber Del die Hauptfigur ist keine Physikerin und versteht als Beobachterin dieses Prozesses genau so viel wie der Leser. Leider werden Egan's Bücher in absehbarer Zeit wohl nicht mehr ins deutsche übersetzt werden und dieses Buch wurde vom Autor im Selbstverlag veröffentlicht, ob das die Entscheidung des Autors war oder der Verlag bei irgendetwas nicht mitgespielt hat ist unklar. Ich finde es gut, wenn Schriftsteller sich nicht unbedingt um den Markt kümmern sondern Geschichten schreiben die Ihnen gefallen und sich im Zweifel eben nicht an die neuesten Trends halten. Egan ist das mit seinem neuesten Buch gelungen und ich hoffe sehr das er mit diesem Ansatz viel Erfolg hat und noch viele weitere Bücher schreiben wird.

Interesting math, no plot, bad economics

I like Greg Egan. His exploration of gravity in a universe with unusual geometry is interesting. However there isn’t much else to this book. It may have worked better as a shorter article. Also, what’s up with his economics? Half of the world lives in a socialist paradise and the visitors keep asking questions like “who makes sure there’s enough food?” and get replies like “someone does”. A version of this dialog happens enough times to make me think it’s a joke. I’m reminded of the old story of the Russian diplomat who visits London and inquires about who makes sure that the right amount of bread is baked each day. On the other hand, this is central to whatever little plot there is, so I’m not sure it is a joke. Half of the fictional world is so scared of the “dangerous” idea of living this way that they shut themselves out and endure much lower living standards. Seems to me that in history it’s been the socialist countries that shut themselves off and think of capitalism as the dangerous idea that their populations need to be protected from.

Weird Spacetime is Amazingly Best Spacetime

Greg Egan is a man of pretty wild ideas. Where other authors might put the characters on a strange planet, Egan puts them in an alien (but scientifically correct) spacetime, and then bases the story on that.

The story itself is pretty straightforward, with a couple of nice plot twists, but it fades into the background because nothing in this book is as interesting as the twisted spacetime itself. Thus, when I reach one of the explanatory passages where Egan (yes, it's him, I don't care what he named the character) lays out the consequences of having a multiply-connected spacetime I felt like asking "why can't the rest of the book be this captivating?".

Comparing this book to previous attempts like the Orthogonal series and Dichronauts, Egan has found a setting that is alien but not utterly so - things still feel familiar enough that it's an easy read.

An invented statistic is that 43% of every book is superfluous and can be cut; it's just a different 43% for each reader. I have no hesitance to give this book five stars - the bad parts are good, and the good parts are amazing.

I've always enjoyed Egan's penchant for the outré. His last two novels, however, have sacrificed a bit of good storytelling structure for conceptual razzle-dazzle. I don't enjoy being unceremoniously dumped out the back of a fascinating book with the expectation that I'll fill in the narrative blanks I've been left, when all the math and physics have been so lovingly fleshed out and given life through story events. Will I still hit 1-click buy the instant I see another one? Of course. I've never read another author who can do what Greg Egan does. But I'll be much more likely to revisit the worlds of Quarantine, or Zendegi, or Teranesia, or Permutation City, or even a short story collection, because they're far kinder about returning the reader's affections.
