This is the second novel in the Gin Palace Trilogy. It was a great read - OK, it was violent and that does not usually sit well with me, but this series is just so different from the usual crime genre. Very, very readable.
Mac is our main man, and seems to spend his days recovering from one near death crisis to another. He is the go-to man for the small town in which he lives - in a small apartment over a shady tavern in an out of the way township. Doesn't sound like it could be interesting, but - read it, and see if it captivates you as it did me.

Needs narrating by someone with a gravelly voice – Tom Waits perhaps? It may be set somewhere on Long Island in the winter, but there’s a suggestion of ‘Fargo’ in the style (to me, at least, but then I’m a Coen Brothers fan.)

The hero, MacManus, is possibly the most existentialist-philosopher PI character I’ve ever read (Camus’ 'The Stranger' is even referenced at some point). But if that makes him sound weak, don’t be deceived – he has a crunchy and inventive violent streak that comes to the fore when needed.

I loved the style of writing (it’s one of the first books I’ve actually used the ‘clipping’ function of a Kindle for) and the whole book is a very satisfying taut read. Recommended!

I realise that isn't a real word but it describes this book!

I actually started reading the first one this morning about 1.30am ish as I couldn't sleep. I ended up reading the entire thing till 5.20 am, this author writes so well, I was seeing it all as a film in my head.

It's such an easy read but brilliantly written, I could see it all happening before me. When I finished I realised I also had this one and was able to start it, I read half then had to go out but the minute I came back, I made a cup of tea and started reading. The story is very gripping. I did guess about his dad but it still didn't detract from the books.

Highly recommend this book!

A good book - the bad news just keeps on piling up and you wonder if there will ever be any good come of anything. The characters are developed plausibly enough and the relationships between them are the principle thread of the storyline as they serve to explain the causes of the significant events - so all in all well crafted and well enough written.

I found this book to be well-written and to some extent, intriguing. It had faint echoes of Raymond Chandler about it and I liked that but I'm afraid I found it difficult to overly sympathize with the main character - an anti-hero writ large with powers of physical recovery that even Batman would find hard to replicate. This not to say I didn't enjoy the read it's just that to do so required - in some parts - suspension of dis-belief.

Almost gave up on this one as the story seemed to get nowhere, just pages and pages of description, most of which were rather boring and seem to have very little relevance to each other. However, when the action started, it really started and the book turned out OK. Not brilliant, just OK.
