This book has quite mixed reviews but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Ava is a fascinating character. Tough and resourceful, a wannabe singer and single mum who will turn her hand to anything to support her beloved family and friends. The book also gave a fascinating insight into the different sides of life on a small tropical island. There is pretty much everything thrown into the mix, child abuse, fraud, corruption, the music industry from the inside and an island spirit, not to mention some pretty grisly murders. I perhaps could have done without the ghosts but that's just me. The pace never let up, the storytelling was skilful and engaging, an excellent start to a cracking good series.
Though I found this book an enjoyable read I did find that the action stopped while the character’ Ava’ had to explain things. There seemed to be too much to explaining which spoiled it. I found Ava to be an interesting main character I could identify with, but I did find it hard to keep track of who the other characters were. I found the ending to be rushed, and the missing girls were forgotten. They resolved seemed to be an afterthought on behind of the author, which spoiled an interesting book.

The Samuel character and the whole Harr'y's business/money laundering in a FBI infected context were too much for a story that could flow easily around the artist Ava, from childhood to cancer fight... Also if the story seems coherent in space and facts, I wonder about the coherence in time: too much happening in short lapse of time!!!!!
5.0 out of 5 starsRipping good yarn, thoroughly enjoyed.
