Chris (C.C.) Humphreys has played Hamlet in Calgary, a gladiator in Tunisia, waltzed in London’s West End, conned the landlord of the Rovers Return in Coronation Street, commanded a starfleet in Andromeda, voiced Salem the cat in the original Sabrina, and is a dead immortal in Highlander. He has written eleven historical fiction novels including The French Executioner, runner-up for the CWA Steel Dagger for Thrillers; Chasing the Wind; The Jack Absolute Trilogy; Vlad – The Last Confession; A Place Called Armageddon and Shakespeare’s Rebel – which he adapted into a play and which premiered at Bard on the Beach, Vancouver, in 2015. Plague won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel in Canada in 2015. Its sequel, Fire, was a Canadian Bestseller. Chris has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. He was the Fall Writer in Residence at the Vancouver Public Library 2021 and is very busy as an audiobook narrator-for-hire.

Being a huge fan of George McDonald Frazier's 'Flashman' Series I was interested in reading some more historical novels. I was certainly not disappointed with C.C Humphrey's book. It tells the tale of young Jack Absolute around the mid 18th century. The author gives great depth both to his many vivid characters and the places they inhabit. We are taken on an exciting journey from Cornwall to the bustling metropolis of London described in all it's pomp, debauchery and squalor. Later on we come to Canada's bleak wilderness and a war between two superpowers.

I really enjoyed this novel. I found it more humorous and enjoyable than just about any of the Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' series. The book is brilliantly well researched with notes on the authors reading list and adventures at the end. Save a tree and buy this great novel from one of Amazons great 2nd hand book dealers.

I was introduced to CC Humphreys in a 'Place called Armageddon' Scrolling through previous books I came across the Jack Absolute series. Having purchased all three, the Blooding actually a prequel, but should be read in order of Jack's life is a story of boy to man, from adversity to survival Jack emerges the warrior he is to become. As a stand alone a very good read, as a precursor to 'Absolute' and 'Absolutes Honour', I can't wait to follow his progress.

A thoroughly enjoyable tale that really brings the smell, taste and debauchery of C18th London to life. Our hero Jack has all the attributes you'd want as well as all the failings that kept me turning the pages. CC Humphreys has struck a rich seam of potential with this series and his writing style, historical research and ability to weave the 'real' with the imagained really made this book a worthwhile addition to the historical genre. 4 stars is a pretty good rating and I'm looking forward to more adventures!
