Grace, you are so right; these are terrific books. I too love the main characters, both human and dragon, but also admire so much about Naomi Novik's skillfully judged period style, her intricate but fast paced plots, and her occasional, lyrically beautiful descriptive passages. Characters develop in utterly believable ways for their time and place, dragons as well as people, and the historical settings are so often spot on. "Alternative" history novels don't work for me unless the temporal context is accurate and sympathetically drawn, and Novik is a master in that respect.
This book starts a little slowly, but soon gathers speed, taking the reader from a shipwreck off Japan via China and an overland flight to Russia, just in time for Napoleon's invasion. Novik is in her element in the Napoleonic war sections of these books and does not disappoint here. We end on a cliff hanger, and I for one can hardly wait for the next novel in the series.
