About the Author

When Matt Coyle was fourteen his father gave him The Simple Art of Murder by Raymond Chandler. Since then, Coyle has dedicated his writing career to hard-boiled PI mysteries following the haunted character Rick Cahill. He is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara and lives in San Diego with his yellow lab, Angus. Coyle's debut novel, Yesterday's Echo, won the Anthony Award for Best First Novel, the San Diego Book Award for Best Mystery, and the Ben Franklin Award for Best New Voice in Fiction. I like this series very much and will continue with the next book in a few days. I don't like that Mr. Coyle wrote that Poway, where I live and work as a Realtor, is in East County, which it certainly is not. We are North County Inland and we have no Poway PD, we are policed by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. Small complaints, perhaps, but I think if a book is written about all these areas in San Diego County, they should be identified correctly.

This series has become one of my favorite PI series. I could not believe that the first in this series was the author’s debut. I had come to the series a little late, but it was great. I could read the books , one after another, no year wait between books. Now, I guess I am going to have to wait like everyone else....
Such great characters, such great description of locations and feelings, such interesting, sometimes twisting plots. This latest book closed some stories, but not all the stories in this character’s life are concluded. I can’t wait to see where Mr. Coyle takes Rick Cahill next. I highly recommend this series. I think you can start with this book as a stand alone if you have not read the others, but you will be missing out if you don’t read the whole series. I promise, you will be glad you did.

Rick finds evidence of his dead father's corruption, 18 years after his death. He's determined to get answers. Meanwhile he's caught up in an investigation to help his ex girlfriend ( is her husband cheating?). This gets, and stays complicated until the end. Lots of twists and turns. His relationship with his dead father, his ex girlfriend, his semi partner.... such a good read!

Even a slow learner like this reviewer new the father was not guilty of the crimes. So it was painful to have to listen (read) our primary character go on and on and on about his no good, really bad monster of a father until the very end of the book. This was my first Rick Cahill read and I toyed with the idea of reading the next book. But I feared he would not make up with his helper in doing his P. I. work. If anyone has read later volumes and I am wrong here, I hope they will fetch me up.
