Another brilliant book! When I first learnt who the heroine of this story would be I was in two minds whether this book could possibly live up to the standard already set. I needn’t have worried.
A stunning addition to the Eye of the Storm sequence, this story takes two of the minor character from there and twists their lives with Escher-esque skill. The plot has more twists than the average labyrinth, is compelling and fast paced. The characters are well thought out and raise both sympathy and annoyance in nearly equal measure. While dark in places this is not a somber story and there are a few hints of characters who may be interesting if/when followed up in future books, yet those hints do not detract, nor is the story left ‘unfinished’ though there is clearly more to tell.
Do you have to have read the previous books? Probably not, though there are a couple of references that might be puzzling.
Would it help if you have? Yes, absolutely. Not just to clarify the few links but to appreciate the skill of the author!
Only one last thought, the story starts slowly, give it time, if you are not breathless by the end I’d be surprised.
