Sometimes when you win, you lose.

Immortality? Escape from poverty? Cool.
Forced to enter a group of vampires that are not...errrr...welcoming to their newest member. Not so much.

Our Ria is back with a vengeance. She is up to her usual antics. That's who she is, who she has always been. It's why we love her.
But now she is forced to play by a very new, very lethal and rigid set of rules at vampire boot camp. Queen Phea's word is law, and it's a real bitter pill for Ria. She is left helpless to go against Phea, when she wants to with every fiber of her being.
Queen b___ seems to hold all the cards, and she literally holds all that Ria holds dear hostage. The community of vampire boot camp was in some ways surreal and some ways seemed like it was very stark straight out of a nightmare.

There is so much going on in this book! I felt like I just got to eat the first bite of an extremely decadent piece of red velvet cake. Our regular cast of characters is there, and a whole new crew that we are just starting to get to know in this book. I cannot wait to learn more about them. To mention a few:

Mark? Sex on wheels.
Eugene? Oh my gosh. I don't even want to go there. I am SO intrigued about where this relationship w/R can go, given his relationship with James.
Mindless? Wow. I want to know more and more and more about his statistics, that was an awesome plot line. Very original.
James? Everything ALWAYS comes back to James.
Boden? Call me crazy, I trust him implicitly.
Ari? Love that name. Curious to see how she will fit into this Broken World. I felt like I detected some jealously on Ari's part even aside from the quick Ria/Mark encounter - but I can't put my finger on why, so that is probably just in my head. But there it is.

I think there are so many different ways to go in this series....and I hope all are explored.

Did not disappoint.

I received this book from the author and from 'Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock'. This is my honest review.

This book is the second of the "Broken World" series by Ms. Costanzo. The first is "Blood Phoenix: Rebirth." This book is not meant to be read as a stand alone. It is a paranormal novel that delves into the strict world of vampires.

The pacing of the book is fast. The writing was tight and filled with tension. There were no grammar errors or typos that I could see.

Ria has just recently been turned into a vampire. At the opening of the book she is recovering from wounds that would have killed a human. Everyone is amazed that a vampire so young could recover so fast and have some control over her base urges.

Ria is being mentored by Gene, a vampire that is over eighteen hundred years old. Her powers are growing, and the queen and those close to her fear her powers and renegade status.

There are many secondary characters in this book. Their presence and side stories help pull the main story together cohesively. This story examines her need to remain true to herself and to those she loves and respect yet survive and perhaps thrive in the vampire community that is ruled by a queen that has lost all humanity.

It is different kind of vampire series. I enjoyed the nuances of the characters and enjoyed seeing them grow as they face foes and challenges that test their strengths and weaknesses.

Be sure read the first of the series "Phoenix Blood, Rebirth". This is the second in the series, so I recommend reading the first and be prepared to get the third book
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Paranormal Read! 29 October 2014

I very much recommend reading the First book in this series First. In my case I did not, I'm on tour with this book and I didn't get the opportunity to read the first book.

With skipping the first book in any series, it will cut the experience and full knowledge of who, what, when and where in some cases.

However, it did not deter me and this was absolutely a wonderful paranormal read! I really enjoyed the world that was laid in my mind and the characters were also amazing. Paranormal is my favorite genre and this book made it to my favorite list. Definitely recommended!
