There’s a lot of urban fantasy books out there, but writing couple Ilona Andrews stand head and shoulders above most of their genre peers.
Blood Heir continues the story of Atlanta, trapped between technology and magic, which began with the first Kate Daniels book. This most recent book is set in the same world, but from the perspective of Kate’s daughter Julie.
The richness and detail of the Andrews dystopian world-building anchor their fantasy elements. It is easy to suspend belief and accept werewolves and razor-feathered birds and ancient magic, because the everyday details of a crumbling city seem so real.
The Andrews excel at character development; even minor characters are alive and individual. This book, set 8 years on from the last Kate Daniels book does the difficult (but successful) job, of showing characters, familiar as teenagers. grown into their formidable adult selves.
I hope Blood Heir is the first of a series, but even if not, it is a satisfying read, full of epic battles, snarky jokes and clever and complex plotting.
