Thank you Kim Falconer for writing such an intelligent strong female character. Ava reminds me of a kick-arse adult version of Hermione, with mixed martial arts, and knife and gun skills, instead of a wand. The world needs these female characters realistically flawed, searching for themselves with a strong moral compass and steadfast resolve. Even when her world is turned upside down, her needle points true North.
The visuals are delicious, set in the heart of what's left of Los Angeles after 'the big one', from dangerous old ruins and partially rebuilt ghettos, to big-money opulence, and the natural beauty of things reclaimed by the ocean. Then there are small segments of almost normal university life contrasting with the truly bizarre things Ava finds herself dealing with.
This dystopian world is populated with interesting, scary, funny, believable characters, adding suspense, grit and blood to what is a very wild ride!
It took 9 days to read this because my 17 year old daughter kept snatching it when I had breaks and wouldn't give it back! Two copies would have been handy!
I read the last 70% in two days, I couldn't put it down, the pace of this book pulled me along easily. Even with the kids on school holidays, at times I noticed my quickening heartbeat was drowning out their requests for food.
I'm glad to hear Kim Falconer is writing the second Ava Sykes book, because I'm hooked and hungry for more!
Boy was I glad I bought this book. It is well written with a heroine that kicks ass...literally.
Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.

"The Blood in the Beginning" has been a long time in the making...
I was thrilled and hooked the second Kim shared info with us on a new series she's writing... -...that was back in 2013...
I kept bugging Kim over the years on when Ava will finally make her appearence... basically out of sheer desparation (coz I ran out of books to read) - unfortunately she never could tell...*grumbles*
Then - earlier this year, Kim finally delivered the news I had been waiting for: a release date for the first Ava Sykes novel!! [WOOT!]
This is how much I was looking forward to this book/series... thus ultimately my expectations for it were skyrocket high... (I am a very picky reader).
Luckily, she [Kim] did not disappoint :-)
The story jumps right in with the action. BAM! Ava Sykes is in da house!
Even though the heroine - Ava, really seems to be out of this world and could even beat Zeus's hiney (making it a tad unbelievable how she ALWAYS seems to manage to get herself out of strife and beating the most insane odds by just kicking and punching (sometimes biting ;-) her way out of the situation), it fits with the entire setup of the story.
Ava is Mar (some kind of psychic, physically superior merfolk) after all (albeit an hybrid - which apparently makes her even more superior to the rest of her folk) - which she had no clue about until she was discovered by the "Observers" and their 'counterparts'.
Thus Ava's life is thrown into disarray as both sides have plans for her...
Not knowing who she can trust she embarks on a journey to unravel the mysteries surrounding her. On this journey, she is discovering more about herself and her past than she ever dreamt of.
'The Blood in the Beginning' is fast paced with quite a few twists & turns and has everything a fan of Urban Fantasy or the paranormal is looking for: crime, captivating fight scenes, suspense, inexplicable occurences, gore... PLUS there is also humour and UST...
The little insights into Astrology that Kim gives & that make up part of the characters (traits) are what makes her style of storytelling so unique.
All characters in the book are quite mysterious and mulit-layered, displaying a wide range of differing traits:
sexy, smart, insane, delusional, manipulative, clueless, naive, bossy... (just to name a few) - with quite the tough heroine in the middle of it all.
My favourite is Salila - I recognise myself in her... minus the sexual innuendo part...lol.
She is a crazy (the good kind), smartass/-mouth, sassy, protective and funny biatch. Yup. Me to a tee (*laughs*)
I want more scenes between her and Ava - thems the best parts of the book (alley fight + @ Ava's apartment)!
Book one in the "Eyes of a Demon" series [least that was once a working title; don't sue me if it's not any longer] is a very enjoyble read that is hard to put down.
I for one, am very much looking forward to many more sleepless nights & am anxiously awaiting the next installment...
[which hopefully won't take as long as it took for the 1st book to come out... - but what is the saying: "good things come to those who wait"... thus I will wait...and wait...and wait... - for Kim's books are definitely worth the f***g wait!!]
Kim Falconer Rocks. Must read. Need next book soon please
