Product Description

I am loyal, but I will betray you.
I am strong, but I have scars.
I am an angel, but the devil.
I met her when I was sixteen and she was a breath of fresh air. She swooped in, making me smile. But then she left, taking my next breath with her.
Her smile could light up a room, making my black heart pitter patter.
I found her again ten years later, with a syringe in her arm.
Blood coming from between her legs.
She was broken and I was glad she was broken. She wouldn't think less of me and my damaged ways.

From the moment TL Smith revealed the blurb I was intrigued. When she revealed the cover, my god it was perfect and now I had a sexy visual. I could not wait to get my hands on Black. TL has an amazing talent for writing suspense, her writing is intense and gritty while still giving you all kinds of feels. I'm always left wondering just how deep she is going to go, how many more twists does she have up her sleeve, when are these knots going to unravel.

For those who love TL’s writing Black is going to blow you away and for those who haven't read her previous work you clear your day, once you start you will not want to put this down. From the moment I started reading I was hooked.

Past
Meeting at 16 they came from two different worlds at school, she hangs out with the cool older kids and he is the ultimate bad boy that everyone is scared of. One random night these two broken souls come together, connecting in an unusual way. There conversations consist of few words. For once he has a meaning to get up in the morning, until she disappears from his life…

“She was the light and she took it with her that day, stole it and never gave it back.”

They say love is blind, for Rose it truly was. Dating the popular boy at school, she loved and trusted him. It was to late for Rose she was in too deep when she realised who she was dating. He didn't love her it was all a fantasy, he turned into her biggest nightmare. A demon she needed to escape.

“My heart was broken, and he’d stolen it.
Then I escaped.
I ran.
From one dark place to another.”

Present
Rose is troubled, broken and lost, her soul is dead after everything she has been through.

By definition, black is an absence of all colour and light - point taken, regarding this narrative...not really your sunshine, lollipops and rainbows story here! Pulled together by some unexplained attraction are the two main characters...addictive-type Rose and the dark, enigmatic Black.Their journey is troubled, tragic.

This book has a strange drawing effect, however. It's written in the newly popular, present tense, which adds to it's edgy, personal, 'happening now ' style of writing. It reminded me of a modern, but more brutal, film-noir-type movie that Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were famous for..clipped, quirky and intimate dialogue with elements of violence, crime, toughness, unemotional characters that yearn to be loved (the guy would die for the chick, but he can't crack a smile)..you know - all dark, shadowy, chic and broody with blurred lines between good and bad.

'Black' was a powerful read and you got the feeling that things were always bubbling, ready to surface. On the downside, I felt there were a lot of coincidences, even for a book of fiction. There were also some typos and the dialogue/storyline didn't flow easily at times. In fact, it was often sparing with words, but maybe that was all part of the allure. I read it over a couple of days, as I had time, without losing focus. I also reflected on it quite a bit. However, I'm not sure 'liked it' is quite the phrase I'd use. Watching the lead up and the aftermath of an accident, maybe. Oh, and it has a second installment to come...not a fan of that...no matter how good the previous book, something is lost in the long wait (unless it's published hot on the heels of the first narrative.)

5+ stars. Reviewed on behalf of A Book Lover’s Emporium book blog

Well, OMFG where the hell do I begin with this mind &%*£ that is Black.

I absolutely loved this book and the turbulent rollercoaster ride it takes you on. I gasped, almost cried, shouted and wanted to throw my kindle when it ended. I don’t want to say too much and ruin the awesome read that this is as you really need to find out for yourself just how brilliant it is. This is the first book by T.L Smith I’ve read and I really cannot understand why I have not found her before.

It follows Black, a tall, bearded, built, gorgeous enigma who is a hitman for hire and the best at his job. He is a busy soul who has no time for friends, family (not having any) or timewasters. Then he sees her. The one who disappeared 10 years ago without a trace, left him alone after making him feel. She’s high as a kite, bleeding from between her legs and is staring at him, pleading with him to help her (he thinks) until she fights for more drugs. Does she recognise him and should he save her after she left him??

Rose. Ahh poor, not so innocent Rose. Broken and bruised (literally) and ready to give up on the world until she seems to have been given another chance by him. The boy she loved at the tender age of 16 before her world was turned upside down and inside out, leaving him and herself behind in the process.

Can two lost, completely broken and f*&^%d up people really mend each other or are they destined to be a disaster waiting to happen?

I warn you now this has a kind of cliffhanger ending as the next book is in the pipeline but even if you are not good at waiting for the next instalment – which I am NOT – please read this book regardless!
