Ta-Nehisi Coates is a fantastic writer. His work on the Black Panther is some of the best writing ever seen in comics. This collection which throws together two ranges of issues with a huge gap in the middle #13-18 and #166-172. This is because they actually are one story. That involves religion, belief, the history of Wakanda, and one of T’Challa’s oldest foes.
The story revolves around multiple threats to Wakanda. First, the gods that had not only protect the country, but it turns out helped found it were gone. That gave way to the Originators, the original beasts that inhabited the country before it was created. They are returning and want revenge upon the humans. This was because the gods actually colonized the Originators’ territory, defeated them in war, and then banished them into another dimension. Third, Klaw and a crew of other villains were manipulating the situation to their own ends. Fourth, that unleashed unintended consequences of a mythical proportions.
This all poses larger philosophical questions which Coates has brought up in other issues of the Black Panther. For example, can a country continue if its founding myths are not only untrue, but disappear? Can faith sustain a nation?
Coates also does a masterful job with his characters. T’Challa is smart and cunning as ever. Storm is also there and not only shows her ultimate power, but delves deeper into her relationship with the Panther. The Queen Mother shows that she is the ultimate politician able to work through crises and bring different groups together for the greater good.
In the end, this is a fantastic collection. The art is top notch. The story is even better. You can read it just at face value with the villains scheming, T’Challa trying to out think them, and the action. The bigger issues the story raises makes it even better.
