About the Author
Fleur Ferris spent the first seventeen years of her life growing up on a farm in Patchewollock, northwest Victoria. She then moved twenty times in twenty years.
During this time, Fleur sometimes saw the darker side to life while working for a number of years as a police officer and a paramedic.
She now lives a more settled lifestyle in Moama, southern New South Wales, with her husband and three children.
Fleur's colourful and diverse background has given her a unique insight into today's society and an endless pool of experiences to draw from. When she isn't weaving this through her latest story, reading or spending time with her family, you will find her with friends, talking about art, books and travel.
Fleur's first novel, Risk, won the Australian Family Therapists' Award for Children's Literature, the Sisters in Crime Davitt Awards for Best Young Adult Novel and Best Debut Book 2016, as well as a YABBA in 2017. She has also written Black, Wreck and Found for young adults. Nullaboo Hullabaloo is Fleur's first novel for young readers. --This text refers to the mass_market edition.

I loved the book Risk by the same author, one of my best reads last year. Australian author Ferris writes well, it took me some time to get into the beat of the book. The opening is gripping, then it changes but eventually, I was able to handle the jumping aroung. Who to trust, keeps you guessing. Will make a great movie.

My 12 year old daughter has just finished this book and has also read risk. She loved the twist in this book and came to me many times to tell me what was happening. I would highly recommend both books to anyone. fantastic author.

TOP 500 REVIEWER
Actual rating 3.5 stars.
I’d seen ‘Black’ pop up on my recommendations a number of times, and had some fellow book bloggers also gently nudged me to pick up this title. I’m really glad I did. It’s great to add a title from an Australian author, and I had a blast reading it. ‘Black’ has moments of suspense, but wasn't a compulsive page-turner, though, engaging enough for me to complete in a few sittings.
Ebony ‘Black’ Marshall is an intelligent, gutsy protagonist. I found her engaging and interesting to read. Not a loner, or warrior-heroine, she’s just a girl going about her own business, trying to get through high school, and ignore vindictive gossip.
I liked her moxy. She thinks things out for herself. Investigates. And doesn’t need to be mooning over a guy to make her life worth anything. The backdrop of the National Park and Water reservoirs added a point of difference for me. Black wasn’t afraid to roll up her sleeves and get dirty.
I had guessed most of the plot early on, however, I got few surprises, but still enjoyed the book despite the predictability. Fleur has a unique narrative style that feels everyday Australian. After so many American authors, I felt relaxed and the writing style resonated with me. It really did feel like home. As though no-one was pretending to be someone they are not.
This is a well-paced mystery. I liked the elements around Black’s past and gave me a shiver or two. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who loves YA mystery. While it didn’t blow me out of the water, it has a unique style that is very appealing.

This book was fantastic, the plot was fast, the small town setting surrounded by woods was creepy, the feeling of everyone being evil made me unable to guess who was going to be the big reveal. AND our main character Ebony/Black CALLED THE POLICE AND RAN THERE thank you, even though it didn't really help I appreciate some rational thought!
Black has been a social out cast at school for years, surrounded by rumors that she's cursed because 3 of her close friends have died in accidents the townspeople and class members are suspicious of her and bullies.
When three bullies set the new kid to ask Black to the school dance he ends up telling them where to go and actually be honest with Black about it being a dare, she agrees to go to the dance with him and things start looking brighter for a while.
Things are constantly going on, there's a weird religious cult, bullying and rumor spreading, secrets surrounding her birth, and what happened the night of her mothers 25th birthday.

INTENSE – GRIPPING – HAUNTING READ IT DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS YOU WONT WANT TO PUT THIS DOWN
Reviewed in Australia on 7 November 2016
Australian Author Fleur Ferris dazzles the YA reading community with her 2nd novel “Black” a haunting thriller that will make you check your doors are locked and blinds are drawn at night before you go to sleep!!! Fast paced, action packed with an intriguing storyline – although you will be freaked out, you will be gripped until the last page!!!
This story follows protagonist Ebony Marshall – also known as Black.. Cleverly nicknamed as ebony can also mean black, however her nickname takes on a whole new meaning in quiet small town Dainsfield where priest Father Ratchet has creepy control over a following called the Pure Apostles who are convinced Ebony is cursed and have convinced others of the same thing.
Ebony – “Black” is trying to see her senior year through and live a normal life following her grief over the loss of three of her dear friends who died in tragic accidents. Rather than receiving support for her loss, rumours are spread about her saying she is cursed and had something to do with the deaths of her friends. Due to these rumours, Black isolates herself and finds it normal to be on her own until she meets a new friend Aiden who, on the night of their Year 12 formal ends up in intensive care. This unfortunate incident ignites the rumours and these rumours then become life threatening to Black. To deal with this, Black starts to piece together the events and the root of these rumours to unravel a mystery that started once upon a time.
This book had me engrossed in the story from page 1, I found this to have an incredible plot and it was extremely well written. Parts of the story gave me goosebumps – to think there are people out there who have such far fetched ideologies that impact on people’s lives. I purposely read this only during daylight hours and even though a lot it freaked me out, I was yearning for more of the story as I simply had to know what happens next!!! I formulated a few theories about the next scene or who the real enemy was and yes – I was slapped in the face when I got the answer. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend this to all YA fans who are looking for a book with mystery and intrigue.
Special thanks to author and friend Fleur Ferris for sending me a personally autographed copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and congratulations on launching your second novel!!!
