About the Author

Anna Sewell was born on March 30, 1820, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. After a childhood injury, she was confined to her house as an invalid and got around largely by carriage horse. Sewell spent her last years writing the children's classic Black Beauty (1877), a fictional autobiography of a gentle, high-bred horse. She died of hepatitis in 1878, just five months after her book was published.

I remember these from 50 years ago. (yikes!) Now that my grandchildren have started reading, I was really excited to see that the Classics Illustrated is in print again. I will be purchasing a lot of these. This is a great introduction to classic literature. I know that for me these books are not shortcuts. They introduced me to amazing stories that I would eventually, as my reading skills progressed, go on to read the full length versions.

Anna Sewell's classic novel "Black Beauty" was first published in 1877 and is still a favorite among young readers and horse lovers. Classics Illustrated has produced a highly readable adaptation in graphic novel format.

"Black Beauty" is the story of a beautiful black horse, as related by the horse itself. Black Beauty has a long career as a riding horse, a work horse, and a carriage horse. The author meant to use her novel to emphasis the importance of proper treatment of animals; Beauty's human owners alternate between kind, careless, and even cruel in a Victorian England in which horses were still a primary means of transportation. The artwork is simple but effective; the storyline is easy to follow and quite moving in places. Highly recommended, even in used condition.
