I read this book in a few days. I could have read it quicker but why rush a story you’re enjoying? This book is pitched at YA due to the age of Jane and Billy but I believe this is a book that should be read across age groups.
The author carries part of the storyline within the arena of child neglect and abuse but skilfully doesn’t deter the reader from reading. The subject matter adds to the exploration of the characters’ histories and is sensitively told.
It’s a story that challenges perception, friendship, life and loss and letting go. Having worked as a Detective Sergeant who specialised in the protection of children I feel qualified to comment on how authentic some of the scenes felt. There’s nothing gratuitous or sensational and I would imagine many a reader, both young and old, will reflect on the narrative and learn from it. This could be the book that will be talked about for years to come. Congratulations to the author on a beautifully crafted novel of substance and an exploration of grief.
