Great children's biography! Interesting and informative! Great illustrations
Reviewed in the United States on 6 September 2020
This is another home run by Little People, Big Dreams. This biography of Billie Jean King follows the standard LPBD format (and I should know, we have like 8 of these books). It starts with Billie Jean as a child, loving sports and discovering tennis. Then is proceeds to her tennis career--winning the grand slam and becoming the number 1 ranked woman in the world. The focus of the book is really on King's activism to equity for women in tennis to earn as much as men and her creation of the Women's Tennis Association to go up against the traditional tennis federation, which was not being receptive to the women players demands.
I thought it was interesting that the book doesn't really go over King coming out as a lesbian or the turmoil that caused. It just mentions that she and her former husband and her tennis and life partner Ilana Kloss, started a foundation to promote equality in tennis. I have no issue with that not being a main focus, I was just surprised, because often books about King focus on her struggle coming to terms with her sexuality (as does the movie about King "The Battle of the Sexes."
Overall, this is great. Interesting and informative. Love the quirky illustrations.

Great book to pair with Evonne Goolalong's
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2020
Even though my 10 yr old and I don't play or watch tennis, we learned so much from reading this book alongside the Little People book on Evonne Goolalong. My daughter was completed fascinated by the "battle of the sexes" match, which is highlighted in the book. It raised proper outrage, indignation, and cheering for Billie Jean. I am half expecting my daughter to take up tennis after reading this book! Our young girls sense the subtle messages of gender discrimination in our society today, but so much of it has just gone underground. I think my daughter was relieved and inspired to see the sexism right out in the open where it can be recognized, acknowledged, and addressed. We talked quite a bit about that. Then when you bring in Evonne Goolalong's book, you can start some interesting conversations about intersectionality. These books are simple and well-done yet open the door to so much rich conversation when read as a shared activity. Billie Jean King's LBGTQ identity is referenced in the book but never clearly stated. There is a reference to her husband and then to her partner. Most young kids will not pick up on this, so some might rightfully criticize the book for being vague about a very important issue and part of Billie Jean's identity. I suppose that allows the parent to make decisions about when conversations are developmentally appropriate for their own children, and it also shows that Billie Jean's identity was multifaceted and not solely about her sexual identity. HOWEVER, I thought the book could and should be more "out" in its discussion of Billie Jean's LBGTQ identity and advocacy. Parents need models for how to talk with their children about identity, and books are well positioned to provide such models for them.

Great book to introduce children to how change happens through activism

Billie Jean King (Little People, BIG DREAMS, 39)
The Little People Big Dreams series is great if you want a biographical picture book to introduce an important person to a younger child or as a quick primer story for older kids before they do more research. If you are looking for a biography this will probably disappoint. I usually love the Little People Big Dreams series in that they are biographical picture books that make learning about a new person accessible to younger children. My 5 year old has thoroughly enjoyed this series as we have been slowly going through them.
This one about Billy Jean King and her fight to bring equality within the tennis world. The book starts off with many of the injustices Billie Jean King, as a little girl, faced in sports in both baseball and tennis. I enjoyed having the conversations with my kids regarding the fairness of this and how they'd feel if they were in her shoes. Woven within the story are the underlying themes of activism and fighting for what you believe in. Using those themes and the examples within the book of how Billie Jean King had fought and what she achieved, I was able to talk to my children about what activism and what they could do to change the world.

EXCELLENT SERIES, EXCELLENT BOOK

Because I am assuming you are considering acquiring this book for your child, I will tell you the plot. Spoilers abound.
PLOT: Billie Jean was born into a sports-loving family. When she took her first tennis lesson, she knew she had found her life's passion. She went on to become arguably the most important women's tennis player ever.
TEXT: There are between two and four lines of text on each pagespread, with most of the page being devoted to artwork. My best guess is that it's intentionally around the 2nd or 3rd grade level. Words are kept easy to understand and easy to read to engage youngsters.
ARTWORK: Engaging. Looks like watercolors with slightly washed-out details.
PROS:
- This is a woman whose story deserves to be told and remembered.
- Inspirational. Billie Jean King made a difference to the sports world and all of the girls who came after her.
- Good story.
CONS:
- None.
BEST READ BY: Second grade and up.
NOTE: Billie Jean King was first married to a man and then later had a female partner. Her sexual orientation is barely mentioned and handled in an age-appropriate manner.
BOTTOM LINE: This one's a winner.
