This is an uncommonly smart and constructive book, not only because of the specific strategies and executional guidance prescribed, but also because of the holistic big-picture perspective throughout that can only come from an author who has spent years confronting the interconnectedness of business performance, risk management, natural resources and ecosystem services, environmental challenges and opportunities, and satisfying human needs and desires in an ever more populous world. But perhaps its most distinguishing feature, among many, is that it's not just a book about what can be done in the face of climate change and scarcity -- it is ultimately a book about what MUST be done, who must do it, and the rewards that the doers will reap.
Winston has done the math. I found his approach to translating that math into setting company objectives especially compelling. Drawing on extremely diverse and highly credible sources, he makes a persuasive business case for doing what MUST be done to build a resilient company and sustain the planet. The book is laced with already-occurring examples from iconic companies reducing complex problems to concrete solutions you can build on.
The Big Pivot is at once a wake-up call to action, a pragmatic and hopeful bridge from today's ominous trajectory to a vision of sustainable innovation and a circular economy that is both required and exhilarating, and a thoughtful repository of ideas and springboards for getting there. But we're running out of time. Very quickly. Don't wait for summer beach reading. Read it now, act decisively, and prevail. Your shareholders -- and grandchildren -- will thank you.
As a business strategist who has advised the largest corporations for years, Winston understands the challenges they face. But the real bottom line is that if we don’t address climate change now, we won’t be around to debate business plans. We will have drowned, starved, or died in wars driven by too many people chasing too few resources. It’s that stark.
The book is not all gloom and doom - far from it. The threat of climate change creates enormous economic opportunities. We need new products and services that don’t harm the environment for a huge new global middle class. Business has the resources and the innovative skills to build a green economy. Let's do it!
