Product Description

On 9/11, firefighter Nick Fletcher’s world changed forever. He's unable to rid himself of survivor’s guilt, made worse by the secret he hides from his family and co-workers. Nick's life is centered around helping burn victims, until he is reunited with the man he’d once loved but pushed away. Now he has a second chance at a love he thought lost forever.

For fashion designer Julian Cornell, appearances mean everything. His love affairs are strictly casual, and the only thing he cares about is making his clothing line a success. A chance encounter with the man he loved long ago has Julian thinking for the first time in years there may be more to life than being seen at the best parties and what designer labels to wear.

When Julian’s world takes an unexpected turn, it's Nick who helps him regain perspective on what matters most in life. Julian, in turn, helps Nick accept who he is and understand he isn’t responsible for tragedies he couldn't prevent. Lost love found can be even sweeter the second time around and after all the years apart, both men learn to look beyond the surface to find the men they are inside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 4.5-star read with wonderful characters and plenty of drama 19 August 2015
By Carra at Making it Happen blog - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I'm a huge second chance romance fan, and I'm also a pretty big M/M fan thanks to the emotional stories the genre produces. Having both in the same story? Yes, please. And just for a teeny, tiny bit more emotional impact...let's add in some leftover 9/11 emotional remnants for one of our lead characters. Oh, while you're at it let's not forget some homophobic characters to really stir up the pot. That's a lot of emotion in one story, which for me results in a pretty fantastic read.

LOVE the characters. Julian has the perfect mix of confidence, loyalty, and devotion, not to mention his perseverance and dedication to his career. Nick is our emotion guy. Very much closeted and brimming with a ton of issues stemming from the events of 9/11 (not to mention the whole in-the-closet thing), you can't help but be sympathetic to his character while silently cheering him on to admit who he really is-not just to everyone around him but also to himself. When the two of them find each other again after going separate ways in high school, everything just starts clicking--but there's still the burden of Nick's deeply-seated issues hanging over them for the two of them to overcome.

From this comes the drama of the story, but the two of them together just spark such passion (in and out of the bedroom) that as a reader I could clearly see that between the two of them, there's nothing they can't overcome if they do it together. There's tension, plenty of drama, and the journey of two people who are so clearly soul mates coming back to each other...along with all the turmoil that comes along with that. It will draw you in and not let you go until the very last page.

There's plenty of amazing secondary characters as well. I adored Marcus and Zane, Julian's close friends and former roommates. Marcus was a real trip with his exceedingly outgoing personality, and Zane seemed so quiet and sensitive-just the opposite of Marcus. They're at two ends of the spectrum, and Julian falls right in between the two of them. The fact that Beyond the Surface is book #1 in The Breakfast Club series, and the three of them meet regularly for breakfast tells me that I'm going to have some more wonderful stories and these great characters to look forward to, and I can't wait to see where the author takes these characters.

Nick and Julian are a perfect match, like interlocking pieces of a puzzle-they actually make each other better, with both expanding the other's horizons and together as a couple they are just...complete. Both of them grow as characters in this story, and watching the changes in the two of them felt quite satisfying. The chemistry between them is off the charts, which results in some quite intense, passionate intimate scenes.

Beyond the Surface was a 4.5-star read for me, and I have to say that Felice Stevens is quickly becoming a favorite for me in the M/M romance genre! Recommended for 18+ due to adult language and M/M adult sexual scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic second chances romance 27 August 2015
By Becky C - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I love getting in on the beginning of a new, exciting series. Beyond the Surface is book #1 of Felice Stevens’ The Breakfast Club. There are three men who meet regularly for breakfast, and in fact have made these meetings a priority in their lives. The first book is about Julian, a menswear fashion designer.
Julian is gay, very out, and a talented clothing designer for men. His goal is to be the number one designer for the rich and famous but when he brings his latest collection to the runway something unexpected happens and he’s suddenly one paying client away from losing his business and being homeless. When things look their worst he runs into the one person he ever loved, although he is still so angry over their parting he doesn’t want to admit it.
Nick is an NYFD firefighter who was badly injured, physically and psychologically, during the collapse of the towers on 9/11. His dreams of climbing the leadership ladder of the fire department were dashed and he is now a trainer. Nick is gay but closeted for a number of reasons. When he sees Julian again after all these years he starts re-evaluating his life and all the decisions that brought him to this place and time.
There are many secondary characters that breathe life into the story, including children who are burn victims, the families of the MCs, people who support Julian and Nick and people who want to see both of them fail. It’s a book of second chances, for love, for future life plans, and for forgiveness. I loved this book and read it start to finish almost without putting it down. This is a book I can recommend without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great M/M drama/romance !!! 27 August 2015

Amazing story by Felice Stevens. 9/11's devastation hurt more than just those who died. Lonely Nick is a firefighter, was trapped under a beam, burned, rescued and spent months recovering and in therapy for survivor's guilt. He still feels guilty to be alive. In their teens, Nick and Julian loved each other, but Nick ran. Equally lonely Julian is now a world famous menswear designer, who has had his latest fashions stolen, and his business ruined. He and Nick find each other, and sparks fly. Julian's still hurt that Nick left him, and Nick is still closeted. They kiss, talk, and begin healing their relationship. Nick visits the burn center, because he wants to help kids with burns know there is hope. After all, he survived his burns. Julian goes along to visit the teens, and gets a brilliant idea. His new venture is from the heart, not the fashion industry vanity. There is bullying at the firehouse to deal with, of course Nick must tell his family he's gay, if they want a relationship that includes the ones they love. So, a lot is happening, and through it all Nick finds in Julian what he's always wanted, Julian's love, acceptance, and understanding. The acceptance by family and firefighters is a bit harder to come by. Julian has never wanted anyone but Nick, so his dream may come true. These deep characters are terrific, in this tale with suspense, drama, and surprises. Well done super hot M/M sex, and an interesting plot make this worthwhile.
Highly recommend. E N J O Y !!!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Chance Love 17 August 2015
By Valerie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This story is such an amazing second chance of love which Felice has written so brilliantly, the flow was perfect nothing was rushed.
After reading this story it was so hard to start another book, my heart was so in tune I really felt everything these characters went through I can't say enough good about it.

Nick Fletcher is a firefighter who was involved in 911 and injured so now he is training new recruits and living a very lonely gully ridden life and buried so far in the closet about his sexuality.

Julian Cornell is a fashion designer and very open and out about his sexuality, living his dream of having his own clothing line was everything Julian ever wanted but when someone took his ideas and everything came crashing down he was forced to reevaluate his next move.

Eighteen years ago Nick and Julian we're HS friends/ lovers but when Nick couldn't face the fact he was in love and being gay he cut off all ties leaving both men heart broken and forced to pick up their lives.

When the past meets up with the future 18 years later and Nick and Julian meet again, the emotions and feelings are brought to surface. We get to witness Julian grown from always living by appearances, and Nick living with his survivors guilt feeling he doesn't deserve to be loved, to both fighting to help each other.

Nick volunteers at the burn unit and he brings Julian there to see exactly what these children and adults go through. Julian's perspective on life does a 360 and it is such a beautiful transformation watching the interactions and accomplishments, then we get to see how Julian helps Nick face his demons and come out to his family and admit to the lie his been living his whole life.

"Is it normal to live a lie because your too scared to tell the truth?"

I'm not going to go into this any more because I really think everyone should experience the beautiful and emotional journey that these two went through, although it wasn't always easy, Nick being so much in denial but when an incident at work occurs and his walls come down its all go from here for them both to fully heal and find their place together.

I highly recommend this book and wish I can rate it more than the Five Stars I gave it.

These are definitely words to live by:

"We've been given a second chance. Some people never even get a first."
