“No matter where your interest lies, you will not be able to accomplish anything unless you bring your deepest devotion to it.” Matsuo Bashō
101 Haiku, Tanka and Senryū poems brought together in this collection are nothing more nor less than 101 landmarks in 40 years of life … my life. Reading this book you should expect the unexpected by seeing through your own eyes what I saw. At the same time, it is hoped that you will feel with your own senses the images that I experienced. Look at this book as if you were living someone else’s life. You can experience, as I did, a charmed and beautiful childhood with vacations at my grandparents’ house and summer camps where we were young and carefree and thought those summers would go on forever. You can share a boundless love for the sea and the ships that sailed upon them. You can be that teenager I was, reading stories about historical events, charming myths, and glorious legends. You can live through a time when countries began to cast off the bonds that had enslaved them and can share a part of my life as I joined a revolution. Finally, you can join me as I put away my toys and childhood summers. You can witness a time when I put away weapons and strife and war, and settled down to the life of a responsible adult.
Then, the inevitable – the years of drudgery, long hours of grueling work, and the business of making a living without really living my life. You can watch as I lose my path, one slow, torturous step at a time.
But then, something wonderful and almost indescribable happened. And now I am beginning to find the way back – back to myself. The long journey, for me, has just begun. For you, the journey will be easier and shorter -- 101 poems documenting my wandering away as well as my return to an abundant life and to the self I was meant to be. Today you are the witness of this journey. Perhaps, today, we will find together the old path, that ended for me at that time with a single haiku. My hope for you is that you will choose to celebrate with me the rediscovery of the “right path” with the 101 Haiku, Tanka, and Senryū of Beyond the Horizon.
May we all find peace and joy in our lives and thank God for everything he puts in our path, both the opportunities and the hurdles.
