Product description
About the Author
Laura Waters is a Melbourne-based freelance travel writer, speaker, author and nature nomad. After a decade on the corporate grind, she undertook this adventure, which ultimately changed her life. Laura hiked the length of New Zealand, a 3000-km journey. She left behind the nine-to-five and the comforts of modern life, instead seeking further adventures in the wild. She writes for worldwide publications, including Australian Traveller, Wild, and Outdoor, about experiential travel and her adventures in the great outdoors. She also trained with former US Vice President Al Gore to become a Climate Presenter, and gives presentations to hundreds of people on climate change and inspires others to reconnect with nature.

The blurb on this book is for once entirely accurate. Laura has a good job with a great boss but it’s eating her soul. She’s also not long out of an extremely non-nurturing relationship. She decides to fulfill a dream of hiking from the tip of north New Zealand to the south and puts in a lot of planning. On the second day of the hike her walking partner can’t continue so Laura is faced with a difficult choice: bail or continue alone? She chooses the latter and this book tells what it was like. Who she met, what she saw, the hardships and the wonderful splendour of healing nature and the deep, lasting changes it wrought in her. She finds a new level of self trust and develops a new philosophy of how life should be lived which includes a deep sense of connectedness to the planet, worry about what humans are doing to it and the virtues of living simply. You’ll never feel quite the same about a 50% off! ad again. Sane stuff. Well written too.

This book had me from the first few words on the page. It's not just a travelogue or a story of a place, the reflective inner journey says something of the times we live in and the restorative power of nature. The story sweeps you along, and takes you to the highest vistas and guides you through the difficult places with the sure footedness of a writer who is able to reveal so much of herself on the page. I didn't want it to end and was craving more when the trip was finished. A great book while you are traveling or have time for a leisurely read - this is a book to savor!

Anyone who has walked in New Zealand will delight in going along with Laura as she blossoms into a back country veteran and finds out just how strong she is. Anyone who has done a long distance walk anywhere will fall in step with her by the end. I found the story uplifting and took immense pleasure in the armchair travel. She is a fine companion, though at her best going alone. Bravo! 👍

I went on a hike with Laura - felt her emotions and experienced her struggles. I had frozen hands with her, fell asleep under the moon and gazed upon the wondrous natural world with her. I wanted it to never end. Her words took "me" to a place I wanted to be..... so much so that I am reading the book again. Beautiful!

I loved this book. The walk itself is close to my heart because we live in New Zealand and have walked about a third of it in bits and pieces. The rose is well constructed and very readable, enjoyable too as you wander with the author along the spine of our country.
But that is not what grabs the heart. This is a journey of healing as a young woman lets ago of the modern world and her previous life and finds peace and a sense of purpose in the wild. By the end of the journey she has transformed into a contented person: there are so many echoes of my life in her story, and the life of others as we struggle through the challenges life throws at us.
Read this book for the obvious joy of walking and doing nothing else. Read this book to repair yourself.

A beautiful inspiring story, a really enjoyable read which left me full of motivation to live my life for myself and not what society deems to be acceptable.

Among the best describing Te Araroa Trail
Reviewed in the United States on 21 September 2019Verified Purchase
This book perfectly captures the feeling of preparing and then starting this long distance trail. Especially in the beginning it captures and describes NZ poetically. The author describes her feelings of starting strenuous sections very well. But this story is not just about the trail, with flashbacks it intertwines a life the author is trying to escape. Overall, a gripping read, and captured my attention till I had finished it.
It was quite sad to read of the author's life before the trail. She believed the lie that sex and marriage do not belong together, and so travelled from one relationship disaster to another. It's my wish Laura would also read the trail book for this life: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

A story of overcoming fear, doubt and pain while walking the length of NZ
Reviewed in the United States on 18 November 2019Verified Purchase
This book is so much more than just a story about a journey through the wilds of New Zealand - and an epic journey at that. Laura takes you through an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs, personal discoveries and bares her soul to the reader as much as she bared her soul to the Te Araroa trail. I laughed and even shed a small tear as her journey ended. I couldn’t put this book down, and neither will you. A wonderful story expertly written.
