4.0 out of 5 stars Better Date than Never Boxed Set 27 February 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed all five books. I really like how they all tied into each other. My favorites are Ellen's and Kaitlin's stories. It probably isn't fair because I had already read book #5, "License to Date" before reading the others and loved it. However Ellen's story, "Love at First Date" was very romantic and cute with an unexpected ending.

I do have a few issues though. One I was pretty upset--rather disappointed--that Rachel's story, "Last Blind Date" was sooo short. I really expected it to be the same length as the other relatively short novels, but it was literally only one chapter, if it can even be called that. Another issue would be the ever present character, Ginger. She is in every book, but is really just a side character. I felt like there should've been a sixth book with Ginger's love story. I looked into some of the other books written by Susan Hatler and found that Ginger never gets her own story. It just seemed so odd to have her present in each book but not get a happy ending. It would be different if minor characters in one book did not become main characters in the next book.

Other than those issues I really enjoyed the set and thought it was cute how each story was different and not at all overly mushy or sappy. It was nice to see the inner turmoil of each character as they're are trying to decide if the guy they like feels the same way or just see them realize they have always liked this guy. All these stories of course have the romantic feel and some of the elements found in other romantic novels, but they are modern, funny, unpredictable--to a point, of course, because as the reader you know the ending will be happy--and intriguing. Definitely recommending all of these books. They all read fairly quickly, but that's just because they're written so well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute and Fast 7 February 2015

It was a fun read, especially when you're wanting fast stories that you can read whenever you get a few minutes. My main problem with it was that all of the stories felt the same. All of the characters felt identical, like if you changed their name and their profession, they could have all subbed in each other's stories. Each one of the female characters was a girl who'd been jaded in the past and wasn't too keen on love (or who'd had a few bad relationships), but had a few friends who encouraged (or bribed) her to take a chance. Each one of the male characters was a perfect specimen of manly thoughtfulness. If you're looking for something unique, you won't find it here. But if you're looking for a comfortable, familiar story where you know how each one is going to go, then these hit the mark.

I love this series and have read all 10 of them.
Love at first date - Ellen thinks love is all about looking right together on paper. She meets Henry at dog obedience school and he is the opposite of what she "thinks" she is looking for.

Truth or Date - Chris has been interested in Gina for a long time. She thinks he is a player so she steers clear. Chris dares her to pose as his girlfriend. Gina thinks Ethan is a safer bet but is Chris really a player.

My Last Blind Date - Rachel likes Noah, he doesn't know. Noah likes Rachel, she doesn't know. Ellen sets Rachel up on a "blind" date and Noah encourages her to go. What's up with that?

Save the Date - Kristen is done with men, her last one was married and she didn't know. She and Ethan are friends but he wants to be more. They start spending more "friend" time together. Will she give him a second look?

A Twist of Date - Melanie is in love with love. She falls fast and when she tells the guy he flees. Patti her bff steps in a creates the boyfriend bylaws. Does Matt fit them? Can Melanie keep them?

License to Date - Kaitlin agrees to go on 5 dates. Paul "the bartender" keeps popping up during her dates. Could there be a date 6?

Loved them all and I encourage you to buy 7-10 next.

The Better Date Series – Vol 1 by Susan Hatler
4 stars – sweet
Love at first date is the first story in the series about Ellen and Henry. Ellen is hell bent on finding out that online dating works. Henry is a quiet and unassuming guy who catches Ellen’s eye without filling in one single questionnaire.
Truth or date is the second story in the series and follows Gina’s chance at love. The flow of this book is excellent and I really feel for Gina. Gina is a girl who loves to play a one-sided game of Truth or Dare. She never picks truth. Her dares end up leading her right into the arms of her new love. A great read and I love the progress from the characters Ellen and Henry from the first book. I’m not one for spoilers so you’ll just have to read.
My Last Blind Date is the third story in the series Noah and Rachel is short but ever so sweet. Serial dater Rachel meets her match with this man and her little dog does too! This story introduces Ethan and there is an alpha play out over Rachel.
Save the Date is the fourth story in the series Kristen and Ethan. Miscommunication, misgivings and ego play out well in this story. Gina doesn’t get much of a storyline in this book but other girlfriends Rachel and Ellen are wonderfully intertwined and keep their stories alive.
A Twist of Date is the fifth story in the series and is a hilarious read about Melanie who hands her love life over her friend Patti to organise. Patti’s rules are harsh but fair and Matt proves to be worthy – another perfectly short but witty read.
Licence to Date is novella number six in the series and my favourite. I was laughing and snickering out loud at the quips of Kaitlyn and Paul.
Sassy, quick-witted and teaming with love – each story is a fantastic short read – perfect for a lunch hour and lovers of all things romance will have a smile on their dial after reading this. I love Hatler’s writing style and was super keen to see how the reoccurring characters pan out in the upcoming stories. I really enjoyed this series. I was very much in the mood for romance and HEA’s – if you are looking for sex – keep on walking – these stories have nothing but kissing and that’s what makes it so wonderful. There’s no race to have sex. Or just for the sake of it. These women want too – boy howdy – do they want too! I love that all the women in this series are strong, independent and sassy. I would describe this book as the sweet Sex and the City. Will definitely read more of Susan Hatler’s work in the future.
Just a note – I reviewed the box set which covers stories 1 – 6 – there is an additional story but it’s not included in the set.

This was a collection of sweet stories. The characters were all wonderful and each story put a smile on my face and kept it there. There was NO sex or anything close to it, which was a bummer, but if you are in need of an easy read with great characters and romance then these are the stories for you. They will leave you swooning and wanting more.
