I enjoyed this story even though at times I wanted to scream in frustration with both main characters.
Firstly we have the H who was best friends with the h's late husband, They had been friends since childhood. They had also enlisted together and were serving together when the h's husband died in a helicopter crash. The H had sustained serious injuries after the crash and was busy trying to put his life back together after leaving the army. The H returns to his hometown to sell a house that was left to him by his late mother. He has nothing but bad memories of his home and intends selling and leaving immediately. When he arrives he discovers that the h has also come to town to connect with her parents-in-law so that they can have a relationship with her son (their grandson). Some time ago the H and h had met when the h's husband was posted in Germany and they have an instant connection. Both of them know that the h's late husband had not been a good man but no one else knows what he was like. Although the h reaches out to the H, he is not interested and quite cruel towards her. The story goes on and eventually walls start coming down but it was an uphill struggle the whole way. The h's life was so desperate; she has no money, her in-laws are dreadful, she can't find work and the H is horrible to her. I kept wondering if things would ever improve. The H is injured in every way, physically and emotionally. He had a bad childhood with an abusive father and his older sister had run away and left him on his own to cope with his situation. To complicate matters his sister is now desperate to have a relationship with him but he doesn't want it. The people in town also believe the worst of him since he'd been a terrible teenager and the h's parents-in-law blame him for getting their son into trouble and also for his death.
It's a good story but a heavy read. Well written and if you're a fan of this author then you know you're going to get a great drama that you can't put down.
