The much anticipated follow up book in the Pink Bean Series does not fail to deliver. Although I was initially disappointed to learn that Mickey's best friend Amber was not going to be the central character in this book, I was intrigued by the story of Sheryl and Kristin, Pink Beans owners. There are many twists and turns as we delve into the past twenty years to the very beginning of their relationship. There are some heady subjects to sort through and I was scratching my head as to how it could possibly turn out for the best. However, true to form, Harper Bliss drags us kicking and screaming through tough and emotional times to find a positive outcome. Love can be such a powerful tool. This story just reinforces the idea that you just never can tell what is really going on in people's lives by the way they behave in public. That each of us hide our true feelings at some point in our lives when really it would be best to communicate with our loved ones. There is going to be another Pink Bean book and I wonder if it might just have a bit of a cougar theme to it? Maybe we will find out about Amber. Either way, I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Pink Bean Book 1 23 December 2016
By Jessy Lee - Published on

Although I really enjoyed NO STRINGS ATTACHED, this second book in the series touched on deeper issues and a deeper love between a couple over the span of nearly two decades as opposed to a couple falling in love, the end. The way these two women remained commited to their relationship through both good times and bad as they both changed over the years was heart-warming. Although they faced different issues, this story reminded me of one of my favorites by Georgia Beers, OLIVE OIL AND WHITE BREAD. It too told the story of the relationship between two women over the span of a couple decades and how their love endured the ups and downs they encountered. I find much more substance to these stories than those that fit a typical recipe of women meeting, fighting their attraction for each other and then giving in to live happily ever after. Well done once again, Harper. I look forward to the third installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deeply moving romance novel about true love 23 December 2016
By Julia - Published on

Beneath the Surface by Harper Bliss is a deeply moving romance novel about true love, the kind of love that even in the direst of circumstances gives the support a loved one needs. Harper takes us back in time when Kristin Park and Sheryl Johnson first meet twenty years ago up until the present day. She takes us, yet again, on a journey full of emotions, through good times and bad and captures the characters feelings perfectly. It’s a journey filled with despair, sacrifices, hope and unconditional love to happily ever after, stories that Harper writes so well.

Beneath the Surface is the second book in The Pink Bean Series, set in and around a coffee shop in Sydney Australia. You can read this second book in the series as a standalone book without any issues. The minor characters from one book are featured in the next one and their stories are brought to life. The first one in the series No Strings Attached is a brilliant coming-out-later-in-life romance novel.

Harper Bliss writes excellent romances. They draw you in, engage your mind and capture your heart. Well written, well-paced and with an excellent balance of internal monologue, dialogue, and sexual encounter, this will definitely be on my re-reading pile.

On a final note, as with any book published by Harper Bliss and Ladylit Publishing, this book is of an exceptionally high quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story where love runs stronger Beneath the Surface. 8 January 2017

As time passes, I have learned to expect more from Harper Bliss’ stories; and she never disappoints me. It took me a bit to want to read Beneath the Surface, because the topic touches too close for comfort. However, once I started reading, as always happens with Harper’s books, I couldn’t put it down. Considering she writes fictional lesbian love stories, the artful way she gives each character the opportunity to display their passions, but also their emotional baggage and hopes for the future, can feel very real. This love story between Kristin and Sheryl is a good example of such art.

The story of Kristin and Sheryl transcends time and overcomes weaknesses, making stronger their commitment to each other and the love they share. It is a tale of hope, love and waking up to a reality that can break the spirits of those struggling and their loved ones. The story shows how love can bring strength to those who feel weak and abandoned to their despair. Fiction or not, this story reminded me that real love can be enough to make us want to be better for another person.

In comparison to No Strings Attached, the 1st book of this series, the topic in Beneath the Surface can be considered on the darker side, but not less appealing. The story is well written and developed in three stages, giving the readers the opportunity to understand how fear becomes addiction and acceptance becomes hope. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars long-term romance that lingers and ultimately redeems 25 December 2016

Harper (author) gives us two characters clearly meant to be together - Kristin & Sheryl - and maps a course of their long-term romance that demonstrates that demons and hope both can play a role to enable lovers to experience love and even sorrow. We peek into the lives of these realistic characters and watch them battle through pain, expectations, despair, joy and commitment to each other. Countless times, I imagined myself sitting in a spot in the booth of The Pink Bean observing all of the scenes unfold. A very good f/f romance -- I cannot wait until book 3 of the series from Harper.
5.0 out of 5 stars Like father like daughter? 14 February 2017

Alcoholism is not an easy habit or addiction to get away from, however, curable.

Again another story I can identify myself with. Many people are not Kristin who tolerated Sheryl drinking problem. Personally, I got an ultimatum, "booze or me". Well I am alcohol free for over 11 years

Looking forward to part three, will it be Josephine or Amber? The book made a deep impression as far as the difference between feminist and lesbian. No difference. Lovely story, highly recommend it. Learning from other cultures is always interesting.
