Product description

Product Description

Four contemporary fantasy short stories.

In "The Bellhound" when an independant woman needs protection, but doesn't want a dog, a witch helps her find another option; in "Away He Run" a little boy struggles with being his family's secret; in "The Trespasser" a girl and her pony come face to face with death; and in "Like The Wind" there's not much stronger than the will of a teenager.

Some of these stories have appeared in other collections and in magazines such as Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, and Brady Magazine.

This collection is 11,000 words long, or about 40 pages in a mass market paperback.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Short Stories, Perfect for Your Lunch Break 7 April 2012
By Michael Gallagher - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
There are four short stories in this collection, and each one takes about 5-10 minutes or so to read - they are perfect for those periods in your life where you just have a little while to read as you don't get too engrossed into it then get disappointed when you have to stop. For me, I read two of them while getting an oil change and the others during my lunch break at work.

Of the four stories, I will say The Bellhound was my favorite and I found myself laughing at the concept as well as admiring the author's gumption as she was able to pull it off: without having a spoiler, if someone had told me prior to reading this I would have enjoyed a story of a substitute dog like this, I wouldn't believe it. Nice job.

I initially got this collection during a Kindle free promotion and, as I write this review, the price is now 99 cents: it's worth it!
3.0 out of 5 stars First story is the strongest 29 May 2014

The first story -- about a woman in need, an inventive witch, and a curiously endearing companion -- was the strongest. It's quirky without being annoying and had just the right amount of detail. I felt the rest of the stories dropped off a bit, which is why I went down to three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharing this one with my friends 24 October 2011

Although all four stories are well-crafted, the title story is far and away my favorite. I was entranced by the idea of the bell-hound and wish I had one of my own. I can't wait to read Moon Child: Ready or Not, which features some of the same characters. If this were a paper copy it would already show signs of being passed among family and friends.

LaGuire knows how to write AND she knows how to tell a story. There was no awkwardness in style or voice to distract from the story. This is one of the good ones!

1.0 out of 5 stars eh 10 August 2011

I feel that the attempt at suspense translates into confusion of the whole story line for the reader. I do a lot of pleasure reading of all genres, & would not recommend this.
