I try to respect the fact that authors feel very protective of their literary progeny and so I will stay away from snark. That being said, this is a not a good book at all. At times i felt as though it had been translated from another language. Continuity is poor right from the start. In the first paragraph Colonel Salkil is in a helicopter in uniform with "fine dark trousers" and when he lands in a driving rainstorm and gets inside and takes off his raincoat his trousers are gray! The author informs us that the good Colonel is in an Army Transport Helicopter (capitals in the original) as he evidently cannot be bothered to use the actual nomenclature and he is flying into the "middle of the Atlantic ocean" in an aircraft not suited for that role. The wind is "whistling like a frightened, wild creature". Annoyed by the engine sounds of the helicopter the Colonel feels the aircraft "decrease more of its altitude" vice "descend" and as they descend he hears the rotors slow down . Of course modern helicopters do not vary the speed of the rotors to adjust altitude, they vary the pitch of the blades. Then he is greeted on the science experimental platform by the "Chief Doctor" with "Hello, Colonel Ricahrd Salkil".
The dialogue is stilted - and, oh yes, shortly thereafter the protagonist is out on his fishing boat and finds a 5 foot diameter circular chunk of steel which he and his partner lift up and "gently flip over the rail." He says it weighs 100 pounds. First, a 5 foot diameter "chunk" of steel would weigh much much more than 100 pounds. And secondly, how is it floating?
This is the problem - on virtually every page there is something that kicks me out of the scenario Mr. Cole is trying to establish and makes me say "This is awful." I know it is hard to get a quality editor for self-published books but this book is the poster child for what happens when the author doesn't have one. Only $3.99 on Kindle but not worth it.
