About the authors

In 2017, several authors expressed interest in writing stories for a theoretical “Pennyverse” (author Penny Reid’s Universe) in some capacity (whether that be writing a canon story about new characters within the Pennyverse, writing a continuation of a current couple’s story within the Pennyverse, writing a fanfic in an alternate timeline using Pennyverse characters, etc.) We collated the data we received, marinated in it, and created this collaborative business model.
Smartypants Romance is a small publisher that is indie-minded. It is a business whose mission is:
1) To be self-sustaining.
2) To be value added to: a) the authors and professionals (support personnel) who are published by/within/work for the SRU, b) the Penny Reid Brand, and c) the romance community and world at large.
3) To set an example of best practices, inclusion, representation, professionalism, mentorship, and craft-excellence.
4) To be drama free and efficient.
Hope Ellis believes romance novels can bring us all closer to world peace. She will never admit that she read her first romance in grade school, but accepts that she's completely addicted now.
Hope is a behavioral health researcher by day and writes sexy romances featuring hot nerds and strong heroines by night. She hopes to one day conquer her habit of compulsively binge-watching The Office.

Zora and Nick had this epic love, then one day it just ended, and Zora was left with a lot of unanswered questions. Flash forward to present day and Zora is engaged, living a seemingly happy life, so what time for her ex to pop back up, and pop back up he does! Of course we quickly learn seemingly happy doesn’t always mean happy, and the best laid plans, are actually not always “best”.
What is the best though, is the journey that Nick and Zora take us on. Hope Ellis takes us this epic roller coaster ride with these characters. I never quite knew where the story was going to go, and I was pleasantly surprised each time, even though some of the time I just wanted to lock Zora and Nick in a room and force them to have it out.
If you love epic reads, or second chance romance, or strong, well written characters or a combination of all three, then this book is for you. It is up there in my favourites of 2020. One of the sweetest, well written stories I have read this year.
Been There Done That is the story of Zora Leffersbee and Nick Rossi (previously Armstrong) a second chance love story of first love, hope and forgiveness, and set in our favourite Tennessee town with cameos from new and old Green Valley friends.
Zora is working in the medical research field, having worked hard to get to her current position at the hospital and University, making some friends along the way but never really forgetting her first love, Nick Armstrong. Her passion is her work and I love her dedication and this passion, not only for her career and research, but for her employees and the patients. Zora really feels deep and at times wears her heart on her sleeve. She is a thinker, an over-thinker, but this is part of Zora that makes her genuinely unique as well as her friendship with Leigh and with her siblings and family - all of whom I slowly grew to love and hope we see a lot more of in future books. Oh and Jackson James, oh my! Ms Hope Ellis brings his character a little bit more to light, has given us readers a bit more insight into the real Jackson James and certainly piqued my interest in his own story and HEA one day soon!
Nick returns to Green Valley 12 years after leaving suddenly following one fateful night. Childhood sweethearts, Nick has also never forgotten Zora and leaps on the opportunity to return to the town and the girl he left heartbroken. He returns a successful and somewhat different man, but still so many parts of him are familiar to Zora, and the slow burn of their romance, second time around is a delicious read. Nick is focused and strong, but his love for Zora is unwavering and as much as I wonder what could’ve been had they not separated in the way they did as teenagers, they both certainly bring life to one another this second time around.
Been There Done That is a book I recommend to new readers of the Smartypants Romance series, to readers who enjoy contemporary romance and to all fans of the Green Valley world created by Penny Reid. It is a well-written story, that has characters you want to get to know, to follow their journey, both Nick and Zora and all secondary characters too. It brings to life the medical and research field with lots of the story based on Zora’s job, but the romance has a slow burn feel to it, with the perfect combination of delightfully written steamy scenes that romance lovers will fall for. I really enjoyed Hope Ellis’ debut novel, sharing the Leffersbee family to the world and in particular Zora and Nick. I look forward to reading more of her future works in progress, the Leffersbee family is one I want more of!
Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and the author for the early copy I received of this book. My opinions are my own and this is an honest review. My apologies as this review is a few days late.

almost 70% of the book. It got frustrating. There wasn’t much character development either. I couldn’t see the current romance, it felt more like nostalgia with lust thrown in. It took too long to get a beat on what the h and H look like and in the heroine case I still don’t know if she’s short or tall. On one hand there was a lot of details about their jobs, hers mainly, on the other not much about them as people. For instance, we know she’s black but what’s her background? The author never alluded to her culture. The author talks about racial bias in the context of her study but not regarding her as a human being going through life. As for Nick, is he white? We know a lot about his mother’s issues but what about his father? What’s the story? My main gripes with the book was how passive Zora appeared to be. It’s great to be nice but she came across as bland and a bit of a pushover. Having empathy is great and yes, Nick has a hard life however there is no excuse for him not telling her what was going on at the time, and in the 12 years since. She didn’t hold him accountable for that. Granted he felt he needed to deal with his issues first but commun courtesy would have been to let her know that. He actually never apologized for his behavior and that really annoyed me. He was self righteous and focused on how he didn’t cheat, instead of the deeper issue of trust. It was all on his timeline. He wasn’t ready. Then he had the gall to be upset that she sent the ring back. If he cared so much he could have contacted her then. He is saying it was always her but in the interim it was ok to sleep with a bunch of women. The whole thank you for helping him to her mother was ridiculous to me. Complete cop out from her mother about loving them both. That didn’t preclude her from telling her daughter what was going on and tell her that Nick needed time. It was cruel to stand by while she was devastated by not knowing. I’m fed up with this abusive behavior “ it was for your own good “.

Dr Zora Leffersbee and Mr Nick Rossi have spent 12 years apart longing for each other after their teenage romance was abruptly ended by Nick’s disappearance 12 years earlier. Will there be another chance to pick up where they left off or will the hurt they’ve both endured keep them from each other.
The only bad thing that I picked up from the book was that there seemed to be quite a lot of typos which was a real shame, just because of how I am as a reader, sometimes it becomes a little difficult to look past. I know this is Hope Ellis’ debut book in the Smartypants Romance universe and I thought it was an incredibly engaging tale with really strong and thought provoking messages throughout as well as a good portrayal of a healthy and fruitful relationship.

But, we don't forget, do we? Neither the love nor the pain, and there is something precious about first loves from our youth. Nick, with much to apologize for and much redemption to seek, runs into Zora professionally and vows not to squander what may be his one chance to try.
Will Zora have him? That is the question. He probably doesn't deserve it. Learning the truth for her own edification is one thing. Taking him back is another. But it's not just a matter of all that. New lives mean new complications. There might be a fake boyfriend somewhere in here and there's definitely an evil twin. Are you ready to read it? Yeah.

While a fairly typical romance, what I really like about these books is the 'extra' put into them. Zora is working on a project to help medical people display more empathy, and Nick has an app he's developing for telemedicine that fits right in with Zora's project. It's a timely subject in the time of Covid-19 and presents some good information about health professionals in these times.
Both Zora and Nick are likable characters and their separation was due to a lack of communication and youth. Some of the other Green Valley characters and places show up which is always nice. A quick and easy romance that's fun to read.
