--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, November 2009.
"The gift in this book [Beautiful] is Reed's ability to find the perfect words and use them in ways for which the reader is not ready. The writing is lonely, haunting, sensuous, and oddly beautiful."
--VOYA, August 2010

Half the time while reading this I was getting confused by what Cassie was thinking or seeing in her head. She would be thinking about giant beaches and smelly feet that would eat her when she would be talking to someone. Now I know she was supposed to be high/drunk most of the book, but even in the parts when she wasn't, she was still acting this way. Very hard to follow.
The characters that were shown were not properly developed. Cassie had no personality and was bland. I felt nothing towards her character. Even when she lost someone, she showed no personality, no sadness, nothing. It was odd.
And the ending. Wow. If I had known the book would end like that, I would have never searched for it, placed my order, and read it. It was a very depressing and unclear ending. The way Cassie thought and did things made the ending very, very hard to comprehend. So as I was finishing the book, I kept thinking some moment of Clarity would happen for Cassie where she would realize all these things she had been doing, sex/drugs/drinking/notgivingaflip, had been bad and wrong. That she would decide she would turn over a new leaf and try to fix all that she had done. But that didn't happen. More like she was pulled out of what she was doing. She never truly understood what she was doing and that it was harmful. She just stopped. No emotional breakdown, nothing.
So I'm giving this book a 2. I'm giving it a 2 and not a one only because Amy Reed is one of my favorite authors and I know this book was a mistake. So if you want to be severely depressed for days after reading this book, then this is the book for you! -Wink-
Even if you've never been in the exact situations that Cassie experiences, you'll find yourself relating to the common feelings of family dysfunction, social pressures, deep insecurities, loneliness, hopelessness...being 13 years old.. and the consequences that they've had in your own life. And that's the genius of it.
This book will make you think for a long time after you finish it.
