To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
This is a really well written and thought provoking book. It flows well, and the characters are all beautifully defined. A very entertaining historical novel and well worth a read.
The story covers a wide range of topics all centred around Berlin in WW2. Ava and Leo beat all the odds to survive and remain true to their honour and humanity.
I loved this book, I will probably re-read it now that I know that most of the characters are really people. It gave me another perspective on this time in history

I read this book after returning home to Australia after travelling across central europe and spending time in Dresden, Berlin including Potsdam and via Dusseldorf, home through New York. I recall walking through the Brandenburg Gate and through the Tiergarten in Berlin past the WWII history boards and quietly reading again the horrifying statistics of man's inhumanity to man, juxtaposed against this beautiful inner city park. I found this story poignant in giving another perspective of the incomprehensible. It resonates with the trend in art and post war reviews we witnessed throughout our trip by the current generation trying to comprehend. This story of courage and love speaks to the trauma with heart and hope.
This book has been researched brilliantly, and weaves an incredible story from start to finish. Kate has brought World War II to life in a very personal way.

I enjoyed the story line and I liked the characters and it was interesting to read the fact that some Berliner’s helped to hide the Jews and with their escape. It appeared to be well researched.
