Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.
And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.
Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So... what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?
Likely, the last thing you expect.
Beard Science is book #1 in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries series and Book #3 in the WInston Brothers series. Each book is a standalone, full length (110k words), contemporary romantic comedy novel, and follows the romantic exploits and adventures of one of the six Winston Brothers.

It's wonderful having all the other Brothers & partners so intertwined in the books, it's what brings a richness and depth to the stories.
I can't boast enough about Penny's writing, it is intelligent, witty & funny, making this series a breath of fresh air for me. Really looking forward to the next book & more of Cletus and his sausage... 😀
From the moment I met Cletus in Grin and Beard It I knew I wanted to know more about him I truly fell in love with this quirky brilliant bearded man!. What can I say but Penny Reid did not disappoint such an incredible story I just loved it! In the words of the heroine Jennifer "you sweet, terrible, infuriating, hilarious, clever man.” Cletus was amazing, and Jennifer was as sweet as her baked goods a match made in heaven!
I cannot say enough about this book without swooning and smiling I want a Cletus of my own! Or any of the Winston Brothers for that matter.
5+++++ Stars and beyond
Jenn is gorgeous and I love her character development, and I may even share Ashley's opinion of Cletus being my favourite brother! Plus, it is great finding out what happens to the brother's after their book ends.
It KILLED me!
Is has ruined me for all other books . . . for now. :)
Cletus is a much loved character since we were introduced to the Winston clan (you can read this before reading the others, but I recommend reading the other books first - they're worth reading!) by Penny Reid. Her fans have been raving about him. I was sceptical especially as we start learning more about him in previous stories. His siblings describe him as sneaky, manipulative, revenge seeking know-it-all. And he hides all of that by appearing to the outside world as a simple bumpkin. And while I picked up he was wise and loved his family I couldn't help but wonder how could this guy be a book hero? How can give up all the show and pretense and find that special person who's meant to be his?
And then Jennifer comes along. I love her. I adore her. And I understand her so well. She's awkward, clever and a little beat down.
Jenn and Cletus together - Wow! What a pair. They were sweet, they were sneaky and they love so deeply. And they changed, so much, and yet they stayed the same.
But what I loved even more were the rest of the Winston clan. All of them together. I wish they were real. I wish I lived next door to them. They were funny, kind, loving, a little sneaky as well.
This book has it all. If you're looking for funny, intrigue, the FEELS, a touch of angst (but not too much, personally I hate angst but this only had a teeny, tiny amount which was perfect) and a HEA so stunning you're just sitting there in a warm bubble of happiness this is the book for you!

I thought I knew Cletus quite well but I found there was so much more to know about him. I'd never seen vulnerable, out of control Cletus before and it was such fun and quite lovely to see him this way. It would easy for any heroine to be overshadowed by the huge personality that is Cletus but even the initial, quiet and silent Jennifer was able to punch though the bearded spotlight. I liked and then grew to love Jennifer and her transformation. The only painful process being the constant longing for cakes; as I read it over six days, that's six days of needing cake.
The storyline had substance, the chemistry was subtle for a while until it simmered to boiling point. These two were magical together and I enjoyed the restraint and freedom both. There was a most emotional scene between the brothers and sister that had me misting up. I love this family who I'm coming to know quite well and I definitely want more.
WHY DID I NOT START THIS BOOK EARLIER AHH!!!! This book is Amazing, with a capital A!! We first meet Cletus in book number one "Truth or Beard". He is the third oldest brother and is famous in Green Valley for his sausage (yes an actual sausage, get your mind out of the gutter haha) and this sneakiness. As Jennifer pointed out "Cletus Winston was the sneakiest, most manipulative, most powerful and as far as I'm concerned, the most Dangerous man in Eastern Tennessee".
I absolutely love Cletus Winston, I loved him from book one when he introduced us to his famous sausage. We see a different level to Cletus, within this book his walls come down and we see a more vulnerable side to him as he helps Jennifer. Jennifer is the Banana cake queen, she is known for her delicious banana cake and her "costumes". Living a very sheltered life Jennifer needs to break free from her parents. The only person she can think of to help her with this situation is Cletus Winston.
The audiobook is also amazing.
“Stay away from the normals, the small-minded people who fill their brains with small-minded pursuits, who blend in and keep up with the Joneses. Those people will tear you down and make you boring. Instead, surround yourself with the weirds. With the misfits, oddballs, and outcasts. Because the normals, bless their hearts, have no idea how to have fun.”
This book is the best till now. Our very own, very much loved and personal mastermind Cletus Winston finally gets his HEA with The Banana Cake Queen Jennifer Sylvester.
Jennifer has had a hard life and wishes to break out of it and to do so she seeks out the help of Cletus who she has been observing over the years and who she is sure is a person who can make anything possible. :D So for seeking his help she BLACKMAILS him.
Cletus being Cletus has his curiosity piqued and gradually starts falling for the shy, soft and kind Jennifer. This book is full of awe and wow moments. It leaves you feeling empty and sad that it's over. I'm still in funk over the book!
Loved this book, characters, situations and most of all the ending and epilogue. Might re-read it soon when I have Cletus-withdrawal symptoms. Now waiting for Beau and Shelly's book....
Much like Cletus’ sausage, Penny Reid has a winning recipe when it comes to her Winston brothers series. This delicious morsel of contemporary reading hooks readers with its tasty storylines, delicious characters and an aftertaste that leaves us salivating for more.
On the menu this time has to be one of my most anticipated characters, Cletus Winston. From his very first introduction he commandeered the limelight with his scene stealing antics, and I've waited impatiently for his turn front of house.
If there's one thing we do already know about Cletus, it's that he's wiley, sneaky and has his fingers in many suspect pies - all in the name of protecting his family. He also has an persona as a somewhat oddball, which he's more than happy to use to his advantage.
Someone who isn't falling for any of Cletus' tricks is one of the Towns most underrated and underestimated residents, Jennifer Sylvester. For she is onto Cletus and as dangerous as she thinks he maybe, he's just what she needs to shed her unwanted skin.
They form an unlikely alliance, (which just so happens to be one of my favourite pairings), and what ensues is a robust, lively romance that appeals to my sweet tooth and my harm warming sentiments.
Penny once again delivers a stella dish that has me sending my compliments to the chef.
I have wanted to read about Cletus since Reid introduced us to him in Beauty and Mustache and I have to admit that she didn't disappoint me in the slightest. If anything, she even surpassed my expectations and hopes for Cletus and his love interest. Although he isn't as mysterious anymore he's still oh so mindblowingly wondrous to read about. And so was Jennifer.
When Penny dropped the bomb that Cletus wouldn't get together with Quinn's sister Shelly as hinted at the end of Grin and Beard It (and in a newsletter or two), but rather with Jennifer - the queen of banana cakes, I was actually a bit flabbergasted as I really thought that Cletus and Shelly would make a lot of sense. But I don't think so anymore. It isn't because Shelly's not awesome - she still is - but Cletus and our little blackmailing Banana Cake Queen actually make a lot more sense as these two make me gush and they're oh so right for one another.
I am actually kind of cheating with this reading challenge point because I would literally like to be as awesomeballs as Cletus Winston. I don't think I would like to be him per se because his beard is a bit too unruly for my tastes, but the conniving, clever, funny, adorable Cletus Winston is freaking awesome and you'd have to be nuts to not to be someone as great as him.
If you haven't read Penny Reid yet, what on Earth are you still waiting for? Go grab a book and be prepared to fall in love. :)
