All is fair in love and auto maintenance.
Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually. Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket. Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever. She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words. Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life. The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most.
Beard in Mind is book #4 in the Winston Brothers series. Each book is a standalone, full length (110k words), contemporary romantic comedy novel, and follows the romantic exploits and adventures of one of the six Winston Brothers.

Of course, this was all wrapped up in another wonderful Winston Brothers book. I like the crossovers to the previous books and I am sure there were a few hidden treasures I will come to appreciate more as I read the rest of the series.
This time we get to hear Beau's story. Beau's got a twin, Duane. Together with him and an older brother, Cletus, they own a car repair shop.
Unbeknown to Beau, Cletus hires a new mechanic. And wouldn't you know it? It's a woman. And she's stunning, as in drop-dead gorgeous. But she's very prickly, brusque and difficult to know. She's also a very good mechanic.
So why is Shelly the way she is? She suffers from OCD, for which she's getting treatment.
Even though she's not showing it, Shelly likes Beau. Beau reciprocates. There are hiccups, as there always are.
I liked Beard in Mind more than the first volume whose protagonist was Beau's twin brother. I did have to suspend my disbelief about a couple of things, nothing major though.
This author can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. I loved how Beau and Shelly's love story further built on and enriched all the stories presented through the Knitting in the City and Winston Brothers series. Just brilliant.
Always fun to catch up with the rest of the family and have a few teasers thrown in... definitely enjoyed the laugh out loud lines! Can't wait for the next instalment...

Speaking of Shelly, it would take me a while to think of the last time I came across a character as complex as herself. Credit to Penny, she took care and attention with her in the way she was written. In some ways I think she used Beaus character as a device to ask the questions I as a reader and person wanted know.
The revelations in this story are not Shelly’s alone; Beau too experiences some life changing moments and in these moments of Beau’s vulnerability, it’s wonderful to see Shelly blossom and showcase personal develop.
I’m in awe of Penny’s ability to write a swoon worthy romance whilst concurrently tackling serious current issues. Beard in Mind is conscientious and thought provoking romance which was nicely balanced by its comedic value and heart fluttering feels.
I can’t get enough of this band of bearded brothers and am looking forward to what’s in store next.

I devoured this story. Beau is the likeable, easy going brother, but with so much warmth and empathy. How he loves Shelly is just hear warming. The only minor criticism being, I would of loved slightly more of Shelly's back story. I would of liked to of known how all of her OCD began.
However, without doubt a Penny has done it again. The only down side now being she has ruined me for all other books, I tried starting a book straight after but it just failed in comparison.

‘Once more, we were standing in the garage, facing each other, not touching, just looking. Her laboured breathing abated after a minute or so, like she’d searched for and found the control needed to calm down. She retreated into herself. Watching it happen was both frustrating and fascinating, like one of those time-elapsed videos of seasons-spring became summer, summer became fall and Shelly became winter.’
I know that we readers like to toss around the term ‘book hangover’ like a cool modern term that simply describes another fantastic story that seems to haunt you for days after, but right here and now- I can hand-on-my-heart admit to feeling completely and utterly wrecked by the complexity, beauty and turmoil that is Beard In Mind. I am the embodiment of a book hangover. Bloodshot eyes. A tumult of conflicting emotions. Wanting to snuggle under a blanket on the sofa all day in silent contemplation. But it’s such a tremendous heady feeling. Penny Reid’s stories are like how artists must see the world. They paint what you might have missed. They highlight the beauty of something you would have otherwise overlooked. Penny excavates beneath the surface of the beauty and lets you see that it’s made up of different components, not just a pretty shiny surface. There are flawed parts, uniques parts, happy, sad, confused, lost, smart and practical and comical parts, parts that are suffering and parts that yearn to be appreciated, respected, understood and loved. But in the end, all of these varied parts make up the whole of the person and if you can’t accept a part of them, then you probably don’t deserve the entirety of them. Beau and Shelly definitely deserve one another. Their love story goes beyond epic. It’s arduous, painful, alluring, intoxicating, hopeful and so very very romantic.
Shelly is such an intense, clever and lonely person. I just knew going into this story that her cold words and demeanour would be a defense mechanism for something larger, but what it was, I wasn’t truly prepared for. The sheer magnitude of having to go through each day as she does just made me love her so much more. Her character stole the show for me, even though the majority of this book is written in Beau’s POV. Shelly’s war with her own mind and how she strives to be better, to feel like she deserves happiness and love just flayed me emotionally. This is the first book from Penny that has brought forth full on streaming-down-my-face tears and I welcomed it. To have such an emotional connection to a character in a book is a tremendous sign of a fantastic story-teller.
Beau Winston was everything I knew him to be and so much more. The man behind the glorious red mane and beard was stunning, not just in appearance but how mature his character was, even in remorse. The compassion he exuded and his willingness to help anyone made him a hero long before he and Shelly even met. It’s just that through his interactions with Shelly we truly get to the heart of the man, to what makes him tick. What makes him angry or upset. To what and who makes him happy and content. To be honest, he’s the perfect hero without actually being perfect.
‘She wasn’t broken, but her words made me want to break something. Her fear wasn’t beautiful. But her strength, her resolve, her brilliance and goodness were. She wouldn’t be who she was now without her struggles. Life had shaped her, her fear had formed her, and I wouldn’t have her any differently.’
Beard In Mind is an incredible piece of writing. An ode to those who struggle but persevere. Penny has given us a remarkable thing. Characters that we feel we know personally. A family that we wish we were actually a part of and love regardless and a hero and heroine who deserve the mantle more than any two characters I read recently. It’s sexy and loving, difficult and dramatic and there are a lot of revelations to digest. Superb writing, dialogue and characters what more is there to say?

After reading all of her previous books I should be anticipating this but once again Penny surprised me. I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I do. It is my favourite of the Winston series so far.
Before reading Beard in Mind I was indifferent to Beau and had no opinion regarding Shelly either. Now I adore them both. I also love how Penny approached OCD. Shelly’s struggle felt so real and heartbreaking. But she is also so, so strong and brave when she could have been portrayed as weak and a victim. I think Shelly is the strongest heroine that Penny has written. She’s inspiring. And Beau is so much more than the friendly twin. He is such a good guy, mature, sensitive and supportive. The best kind of hero.
This book is wonderful. Hats off to Penny once again.
