Product Description

A hot contemporary romance from the author of the acclaimed I-Team series…

Lexi Jewell left Scarlet Springs twelve years ago, vowing never to return to the small Colorado mountain town where she grew up. Now, here she is—over thirty, out of a job and with little choice but to move back in with her eccentric father. Lexi knows it’s just a matter of time before she runs into Austin Taylor, her first boyfriend and her first heartbreak. She’s determined to show him she’s over him—until he steps out of a pickup truck and back into her life, looking sexy as hell in his mountain ranger uniform.

As far as Austin is concerned, Lexi can turn her snazzy little convertible around and drive back to Chicago. After all, she ripped his teenage heart to pieces and turned her back on the town he loves. But from the moment he sees her again, he can’t get her out of his mind. Even her smile messes with his head.

When an evening of conversation turns into something else, Lexi and Austin agree to be friends—with benefits. But as Lexi starts making plans to return to the big city, Austin realizes he’ll lose her a second time unless he can show her that what she’s searching for has been right here all along.

“Pamela Clare is a dazzling talent.”

—Lori Foster, New York Times bestselling author

5.0 out of 5 stars Colorado High Country 10 May 2016
By Pat Fordyce - Published on Amazon.com

This is the first book in a new series written by Ms. Clare. Well known and honored for her historical romance and romantic suspense (The I-Team Series) this is a contemporary romance that is set in the little mountain town of Scarlet Springs, Colorado. It centers around a group of men and women in Search and Rescue, Firefighters and Forest Rangers ; their adventures, their families and their lovers.

Austin Taylor grew up in Scarlet Springs and other than his time in college he has never left. He is a forest ranger and volunteers for the search and rescue team. He loves climbing and pushing himself physically as much as he can. Twelve years ago his teenage heart was shattered. He was a kid......no big deal. He's moved past it and is enjoying his life with his puppy Mac and his work, friends and family. That is until, suddenly, he sees Lexi Jewell, the source of his heartbreak, standing in front of him. He immediately decides he won't let her under his skin, this time. But after seeing her a few times, and sharing a very hot kiss, he realizes the old feelings are stirring, and she seems to feel the same.

Lexi Jewell is escaping Chicago, a wonderful job at a CPA firm gone bad and her life as she knows it, to return to Scarlet Springs, help her Dad with his B&B and decide her next step. She knew she would run into Austin, she just didn't think it would be as she was heading into town! Lexi's Dad is drinking heavily, acting crazy, and her step mom has left him. He is in danger of losing the Inn. First step of many, is to get him to stop drinking.
Lexi gets involved with the S & R team after she is asked to look over their financials. A previous employee appears to have been stealing. She enjoys the work, the camaraderie of the team, and the new friendship she is forming with Austin. After a hot night in the local pub with Austin they are rethinking their relationship, maybe "friends with benefits?" The benefits are very nice. Lexi still insists she will be returning to Chicago, but finds herself making excuses to stay in Scarlet Springs and with Austin. Lexi is spending a lot of time with the team, the day to day rescues and sometimes life threatening climbs they do make her realize how dangerous their work is, bringing her closer to Austin and not just as friends. Little does she know some of the danger is surrounding her too.

Ms. Clare's descriptions of the mountains, the climbing and rescue efforts will leave you holding your breath. Very sexy scenes, humor and even a little suspense will keep you turning pages. I couldn't put this book down. I'm looking forward to reading more about Scarlett Springs and it's everyday hero's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a new series! 10 May 2016

Loved this book! It's great to see Ms. Clare starting on this new series, set in the mountains of Colorado with a whole new set of yummy guys who are built like tanks and like to hang off rocks!!! Seriously, this was a thoroughly enjoyable second chance romance between Lexi and Austin, who had a hot-and-heavy teenage romance that went bad at the last minute. Fast forward twelve years, and we find Lexi coming back to her hometown not of her own choice, and who does she run into before she even hits town?? Right, the guy who broke her heart all those years ago. Well, that's how she sees it anyway... Austin has a slightly different take on the story.

This was a fast-paced, spicy read that touches on the painful family dynamics between Lexi and her father, Lexi and her stepmother, and Lexi and her sister. Austin was a dreamboat who figured out fairly early on that he never got over Lexi, and the balance of the story was spent with the two of them figuring it out. Throw in a few tense moments with those hunky guys (and gals) hanging from those rocks, a really nasty bad guy, a few cameos from some of our I-Team guys, and some quirky townspeople, and you've got yourself a fantastic read that sets the stage for more stories to come.

The only reason this is a 4-star instead of a 5 is because I thought there were moments when the angst, or drama, or whatever you want to call it could have been amped up a bit, but overall I really like this one and can't wait for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pamela Clare is terrific whatever the genre! 15 May 2016

With “Barely Breathing,” Pamela Clare proves that she can write in any romance sub-genre and have a winner. Already well known and highly respected for her historical and romantic suspense novels, Ms. Clare is now branching out to contemporary romance. “Barely Breathing” is the first in a new series set in a quirky Colorado mountain town, focusing on the members of the county’s mountain search and rescue team. It’s a fun and sexy book about two high school sweethearts reconnecting 12 years after a bad break-up. And since it’s Pamela Clare, there’s also a bit of suspense. The sex is hot and fairly explicit, but never gratuitous. Once again, Ms. Clare has written about a subject with which she is intimately familiar – rock climbing. She comes from a climbing family and, while she might not climb now, it’s obvious she loves the sport. So many other parts of the story also ring true. Scarlett Springs is based on the real Nederland and the manner of the first responders is spot on. I’m a Coloradan who is familiar with Nederland, but also I’m a first responder, as is my husband. We, too, live in a small mountain community and are members of the local volunteer fire department. The small details she got right make the story so believable. I look forward to reading more about Scarlett Springs and the men and women who voluntarily put their lives on their line to rescue others.

Well...compared to some other customer reviews, I guess I am one of the odd men out. If you like lots and lots of salacious contents, then this is the story for you!! Another sex romp! I see that some readers feels the same way I do. For me, the story focused more on Austin's and Lexi's sex life than it did anything else. It led me to think that their physical attraction for one another was the greater source - the 'glue' - that held them together. It was like reading about two teenagers with raging hormones! Became redundant. I wanted to get more depth on the characters and their back stories, and what their deeper feelings were for one another, not the many ways they had sex! Although there were some really good moments, I got frustrated and didn't finish the story. A shame, really, because I think the story's plot had good potential.
I like stories that are real, and about real people, and not watered down. Just like this one. Unfortunately, it was as if the author was filling up the pages by over killing the very, very explicit sex scenes. Way too much information! I like a 'steamy' moment just like the next person. But... wow! The old adage, less is better... Turned 'pornish.' Sorry...can't endorse this one.

I probably won't take another chance on being part of this author's reading audience. My first story by this author.
Author needs to submit a disclaimer. Using the word 'hot' in the author's description of the story doesn't convey enough about the sexual contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Colorado Romance 2 October 2016

I am a big fan of Pamela Clare's writing, so I was surprised to see that she had written a couple of books I hadn't read.

It was clear that these would be different from her I-Team series given the setting and careers of the characters. I must admit to being a very picky reader who highlights editing errors and things that annoy me about either the characters or the plot. When I got to the end of this book there was nothing highlighted. It was a great read from start to finish --an interesting setting, steamy romance between the H and h, as well as a well-rounded cast of secondary characters. Given that I am not a huge fan of second-time romances, this is saying something.

I look forward to the next book in the series and will likely reread this one at some point.
