He was trouble from the start, but I couldn't resist.
She was the best kind of trouble. The kind that was so wrong, it felt right.

I’ve tried and failed to stay away from him.
I’ve done everything in my power to make her mine and keep her.

He’s almost impossible to say no to.
She never tells me yes.

We’re always fighting.
When we’re not fighting, we’re… well… making up.

He makes me laugh so hard.
I miss her laugh the most.

I'm a liar.
She knows the truth, but won’t admit it.

Sometimes, I wish I'd never met him.
I wish we could meet all over again. I'd do better.

His girlfriend knows.
The guy she’s with is a fool.

I’ll never love anyone like I love him.
She doesn’t love me enough to choose us.

It was the wrong place.
It was the wrong time.

It should have been him.
It will always be her.

I know that there are a lot of people who can't handle reading books with cheating in them. Whether its due to them bringing up bad memories, or just not being able to sympathize with people who for whatever reason find themselves in that situation, Bait, by Mo Mabie, is probably not the book for them.

For those who can handle the subject matter, or those who're on the fence, I can't recommend it enough.

At the start, when they meet, both Blake and Casey are in relationships with other people. Casey could perhaps be forgiven for falling into a one night stand with a girl he met in a bar, since at the time he he met her, he was already on his way to break off his current relationship. The decision was already made, and Blake was there ... what difference does one night make, right?

Blake on the other hand, was in a serious relationship, at the point where she knew her boyfriend was just waiting for the right moment to pop the question and take things to the next level. There's no question there. She knew what she was doing, and what she was risking, and yet, there's a reason the word 'irresistible' exists, and she didn't ... resist that is.

If that were the end of things, then perhaps she could have come clean to her fiancee-to-be, and worked things out, or taken her secret to the grave, but things, most definitely not stop there.

In this book we're given the anatomy of an affair, from an insiders POV, and that of the man she does her cheating with. We, the readers, are taken inside the secrets and the lies to understand their desires and fears, joys and guilt.

Done well, such stories get the reader to sympathize with characters they ordinarily would not.

Warning - This review contains spoilers....
I'm not a real fan of love triangles or cliff hangers which is why I only gave this book four stars. The writing is superb and I loved Casey, he's such a sweet guy. I liked the alternate points of view. But, and it's a biggie, there's cheating and I just didn't get it. Although Blake has her reasons I felt like it took her way too long to decide between the two guys, and even when she made her choice and got engaged to Blake she kept stringing poor Casey along! The chemistry between Casey and Blake is fantastic which made it harder to believe she kept turning her back on him. Ah Blake, I liked you but I didn't understand you!
I really wanted this couple to work things out and went on to buy book 2 in the series in the hopes that they would get it together.

I had a hard time getting into Bait at first. I liked Casey almost immediately, but found Blake difficult to like. There were many times that I felt the two men both deserved better than what Blake was giving them, and I'm not very tolerant of cheating. However, I did eventually get drawn into the story, and I definitely felt the attraction between Casey and Blake; that they belonged together was undeniable. I am still giggling over "Betty Is Trouble. Lou Likes Trouble." I found the characters very relateable in a lot of ways, and I liked the fact that neither of them was a rockstar or a billionaire. This was the first book by M. Mabie that I have read, and I am planning to read the sequel, Sail, next. I really hope that Casey's siblings will be getting their own books.

I really wanted to love this book. I enjoyed the start of it and the whole premise but the further it went on the harder it was to push through and keep reading. I just didn't like the character of Blake and didn't find any of her reasons for continually messing Casey around to be understandable or worthy. Essentially she refused to take a chance on what she knew was a better relationship unless the alternative had all the bells and whistles of her's & Grant's life together. I despised this. She constantly made Casey think that she was choosing him and them destroyed that trust again and again. The only possible reason to read the next book would be to see if Casey has a happily ever after but the chance that this might be with Blake is a big case against even bothering.
