Set in the last century 'midst the unsolved problems of north and south, Colm's travels are instructive for those of us from the other side of the world. He remains factual whilst many of the participants of the border areas retain some bitter memories and others seem to want to move on with their lives. it is a fascinating read fro me who has never experienced this juxtaposition of opposing feelings.
I wondered whether things have changed and whether many of those whom Colm met and talked with have resolved their feelings of enmity.
The main thing missing from the text I read was a map! For those who know Ireland better than I knowing whether Colm was north or south was many times very difficult t know. Given his many stops to quench his thirst I also wondered whether he too knew whether he was north or south.
For all that, this was an enlightening insight into the complexity of a united Ireland and just how difficult it would ever to reach unity.
